Yeah, I'll give it a go.

1) Compared to Shanghai, it's quiet. As in civilised.

Well, since 9/11 the whole city's probably walking on eggshells so no surprise there.

2) They have REAL jazz here.

Do you mean Woody Allen playing the clarinet every Thursday night in whatever bar it is?

3) They wear brown shoes. Kinda a 'I'd rather be in the country' thing.

And after 9/11 who wouldn't want to be?

4) The Rainbow Room outdoes The Piano Bar.

'The Rainbow Room'? Sounds a bit gay, Fidel...

5) History ! History !

As old as Shanghai! As old as Shanghai! What - 200 years? 250? That ain't history, that's last weeks news, baby...

6) Yellow cabs with turbaned drivers WHO SPEAK FVKKKING ENGLISH are cool.

I haven't been to New York for quite a while. Guess there must have been a massive concerted effort for all NYC cabbies to learn English. They never used to...

7) They electronically fingerprint you on entry

Er, great.

8 ChinaTown NY has Macao beer. Macao doesn't actually have a brewery.

So why do they call it Macao beer? Oh, Macao in Queens!

9) Nanjing Xi Lu has to wait about 150 years until it becomes 5th Avenue. And make a fukking big park in the middle.

And Nanjing Rd also has to get rid of all the daytime hookers looking for business and the hash dealers.

10) Curiously, latest computer simulations show both New York & Shanghai are likley to be underwater by 2030 if current warming trends continue. Time to invest in t¡betan real estate.

....

11) Midtown, 2 bed apartments run from USD2,000 a month upwards. Shanghai is a BIG frigging ripoff.

You're bloody well right.

12) The "Big Apple" sounds somewhat cooler than "The Large Lychee"

Or 'The Whore of the Orient' or 'Paris of the East' (who came up with that one anyway?).

Keep 'em coming Fidel!

I'm sure it's possible to find US$500 brown shoes in Shanghai too. And people would spend the money on 'em too, just to show to their mates.

C'mon, PM, Shanghai is the epitome of conspicuous consumption.

And I think that New York being so good they named it twice has to be better than Shanghai being turned into a verb which means to drug someone, bash 'em over the head and kidnap them.

Er, can you stop calling me 'dude'?

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam. Why'd they change it? I can't say, people just liked it better that way.

Old Shanghai was just a swamp, until it was pumped out by the foreigners. That hasn't changed much either.

I cant agree more. And as such I defend the right of those foreigners to build a park and keep out the dogs and chinese.

Imagine for a moment that a bunch of chinese had gone to New York built a park, and then put up signs saying "no dogs or Americans"

What would the New Yorkers have done?

Bowed their heads, gone along with the treatment and then complain about it 100 years later? NO I doubt they would ever bring the subject up if they had been so embarrassed.

What they might have done...

They might have killed all the chinese in town and used their corpses to fertilize the park......................they might have caught some rich chinese bastard and shoved the sign up his assssss.

But then I guess we dont have to worry about it, because it wasnt the chinese who built new york..................it was new yorkers(and londoners and parisians) who built Shanghai (and Hong Kong, and Singapore). And if we'ed left it to the japanese it would be a nice place even now.

I thought that too. It just happens however to be on the 65th floor of the Rockefeller Centre and has been around since 1930. A cool joint, and you saw it in "The Aviator". 360 degree views of Manhattan cannot be wrong. Check your web pages dude.

I have to toot my own horn here a little bit as I was on the project to redo the Rainbow Room when Ciprianni took it over in about '98 or so. I am responsible for the cool light fixtures and fabulous mohair upholstery in that joint. They are very good deco repros aren't they? Bet you thought that they were the originals. Don't blame me for the carpet tho. That hidious mess was not my choice.

So The Rainbow Room, despite it's title, is NOT gay and yet it was decorated by the Queen of Shanghai, our very own Lucar....

Where can you find that?! Are you sure you aren't looking at the maintenance fee on a COOP or the CC fees on a condo? I think that even studio apartments on the Lower East Side are about 2000 USD. I think that someone is trying to sell you a bridge.

I can, however, imagine that you could get a "2 room" apartment in an old tenement walk up which is still under rent stablization or something...

The following two websites are the best to real estate websites that I know of in NYC.

http://www.corcoran.com

It's true and I have seen some try to sell for like RMB 20,000+ per month for just an apartment double layer (not villa)

New Yorkers are really cool, hip people. Well dressed, very well dressed.

You should see a B'way show.
Visit Soho. Spent a night lounge around west villiage
Shouldn't miss metropolitan museum and central park.

Numerous first class restaurants.
Enjoy. NYC is King of all cities.
