I miss my kind of entertainment, like good theatre, comedy and drama, good dance performances, book readings, etc. We had a load to choose from in Kuala Lumpur, sigh.......

Am amazed at how many hits this site has had, lots of homesick folks, another big sigh......

As a girl when i first moved i thought i was coming to shoping world... packed only 2 pairs of trousers and 2 pairs of shoes! good that i had to go back... otherwise I would still be using the same trousers and shoes for 6 months now!! IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BUY IF YOU ARE A SHOE SIZE 11 AND for clothes 14! tops can be arranged but trousers are out of the question... not to mention the joking smile when you ask for shoes...if you can advise i would be very grateful!!

i see your point. sometimes they don't even carry a size 8 for ladies. Even at international labels like nike.

anyway, i think i could get about any thing i want here. just need chai tea, giant english bookstores where I could spend the sunday afternoon browsing through, good desserts, theatres with proper acoustics, better clubs, and interesting conversations.

Do they sell A&W Rootbeer in Shanghai? Regular or diet is fine.
Mint jelly?
Beef jerky?
Bratwurst?
Hamburger?
Summer sausage? Regular or garlic is fine.
Grill and charcoal?

There's a video store here that says they would be willing to send me all new DVD releases or just for certain genre categories (for me it would be sci fi, mystery, comedy, computer animation, and action) to me in Shanghai. They'd ship them once a week and all in the same box. I'd have an account with them (basically my credit card number) which they would charge the DVDs and shipping to. Or would it be cheaper to buy such locally in Shanghai?

I haven't seen bratwurst or western style sausages here (I've been looking for Italian ones, but no luck so far). However, you can certainly buy the rest of the stuff.

As for DVDs you can get just about all DVDs for around $1 USD. For in-theatre releases the quality can be very variable. For older movies the quality is in general good.

Regards, Matthew

Tough_lefse,
most everything you listed (including A&W root beer) except the charcoal grill can be found at the city shopper at Portman's, but for a price.

Likewise it is one of the only places that sells decent cheese. Carrefour occasionally has good cheeses but usually just the super processed crap.

I miss hispanic food. You can occasionally find some imitation mexican food from "Old el Paso" but finding any South American delicacys (sp?) is almost impossible. My wife is colombian and we actually found it easier to get her cooking ingredients when we lived in a small town in Germany than here in Shanghai.

Both my wife and I really miss Tums. They taste almost like candy, are a good source of calcium, and they stop heartburn. Last care package we got from the states was mostly Tums.

Deodorant, good parmesan chese is not avilable all the time, many other cheses never available (and chese the price is always high) vines at reasonable price and, I fully agree with Slowbiker", MOTORBIKES.
And the place to ride them as well: no mountain, no sea side, no forest, I've heard about some lake but still have to go.

I'm pretty sure I've seen margarita mix in city supermarket - it's quite expensive though. It's probably considerably cheaper to find a margarita recipe and make it your self - you still have to buy the tequilla! Surely it can't be much more than lime juice and sugar right? I've also seen margarita salt there if you want it all!

There are a few, but its much better now than it was a when i first got here 3 years ago. Mostly its not a matter of no being able to buy, as much as not being able to buy at decent price.. cold cereal as an example. US$3 in the US - $US 6-8 here and all they have on the shelves of regualr stores is corn flakes and sugar kiddie cereal crap. I now make my own granola.. which is easy.

Michael, how do you make you own granola? Thanks.

In my experience the things you crave are the things you can get so easily at home (wherever that may be) but never bothered with when you were there. However, I have never sunk to the depths of needing Marmite!

Try living in a muslim country where getting booze costs a bomb and getting some becomes your reason for living!

oh my god, I am not alone?!! queenmab, I swear i have never felt so fat in my life. i wear a US size 6 pants and have the worst time finding pants that fit my american ass and thighs. sigh. and size 9.5 feet (40-41). let me know if you find hipsters!!

oh, right, stay on topic. you can find just about anything here. EXCEPT Clif bars, which are just my personal favorite 'energy' bar. i have seen something that looks like a Weetabix in some random local grocery store in french concession. i have seen floss at a convenience store as well as City Supermarket. i have seen vegemite as well (which i guess i was never meant to understand Wink).

i think glossy magazines are an awesome present (People, etc. are great trashy reads). books are good, and CDs by less common artists as well. i can't find decent pretzels here. it is all about price though. you can find or order anything, just depends on how bad you want it.

one note, if you wear larger sizes, totally use all your luggage space on clothes and shoes. i wish i had done that.

oh, i hear IKEA has very decent coffee beans at a very reasonable price. you can also get the frother thing there as well as the little coffee press brewers. but it is VERY difficult to find BLACK tea here. i don't know why, it's all the same damn plant. they have some crappy stuff in bags, and little cakes of tea powder that brew disgusting tea. i have seen Twinings or somesuch at City Supermarket, but at a price...

and who the hell needs dryer sheets? who has a dryer here, and what is your address? Wink

Places I've found stuff...

City Plaza supermarket (Juo Guo... something) , Jing An' Temple Station
- vegemite, many 'western' cereals, includes an expensive deli (parmesan cheese!)

Watsons Pharmacies (everywhere)
- floss, deodorant, Tim Tams (sadly not as good as home), almost anything to do with grooming (esp. the Isetan on on the 6th floor, cnr of Nanjing Xi Lu and Jiangning Lu)

City Mart - basement of Hong Kong Plaza (accessed from exit 1...? of Huanpi Metro #1 station)
- aussie-style sausages, Cooper's beer, wine's etc..

Carrefore WuNing Lu
- almost everything listed above, great booze line up, and some lower range Aust. wines.

I'm still missing non-classic books. And, if someone offers me a Dan Brown book again I'll spifflicate them... Has anyone found a supplier of base ingredients for making your own cereal mix...?
ie. bran flakes, oats (duh), corn flakes, dried fruit (not covered in sugar), grains, seeds, etc.

Oh, City Plaza supermarket at Jing An Temple station has a whole shelf full of coffee. Including Illy in metal screw-topped canisters.
