| Post subject: Notebook buying in Hong Kong |
I'm buying a notebook in Hong Kong this weekend. Thinking the IBM Thinkpad X40 most likely.
Has anyone got one and had any problems with it?
Also, I figure Mongkok is the place to go to buy a notebook. Anyone have any other pointers? |

Lots of places to get laptops and all electronics stuff in Hong Kong at a good price. But unless you know the right shops there is a good chance to get sold used or defective stuff which can be difficult to exchange once you have left. I have found the best quality products to be in the larger chain stores there such as Fortress. You make pay a little more but I have always found the quality to be good. And its still a lot cheaper than you can get elsewhere. |

Hammerforlife has very very good points. And what he mentions is true: you might get defective things in HKG, so you should buy only after carefull examination.
Just wondering, why would you stick with the Thinkpad? Why not go for other brands?
I was a Thinkpad user myself, love my previous laptop to death but settled for a Toshipa, 15.4 bright screen. Much more value for the money with similar or superior quality (and doesnt have the square brick blunt looks of the Thinkpads).
And yes, Fortress is a very good store, their staff is pretty well informed and you can actually get good advice from them.
Don't forget to get an extra battery in the Chevalier distributor. They have accessories there that you cannot find here or, if you find, will cost you half compared to what you could get here. |

Thanks for the replies guys, good solid info.
I'm looking at the thinkpad because i've just finished with a Vaio i've had for two years, which didn't satisfy me in durability terms. I've heard good thinks about thinkpads, they last, don't give you problems. I checked out Cnet.com and the thinkpads are all the top rated notebooks there (except one dell, which is for gaming).
I want something light, but i'm a business power user so it has to work and perform all the time. |

I just helped my friend to buy a Toshiba A80 from Fortress yesterday. It cost only HK$11,280 for a powerful machine with DVD writer. Not many of their sales rep knows about this offer, just ask them to check. The A80 showed on the floor is HK$13,680, and the difference is only the 1.6 vs 1.73  and 256MB ram vs 512MB. In fact, we successfully negotiated free 256MB ram, one router and one TV card!

dblenkinsopp, can follow your rationale in sticking with the Thinkpad. I never had any problem with mine. It was a rock solid reliable horse.
But when I came accross the 15.4" Toshibas with BrightView and packed with features, I couldnt resist. A similar Thinkpad would cost some 300usd more than the Toshiba I got (similar to the one MeeeWong mentions, but it's called M35).
Dell notebooks are SHITE. Had one from my company and hated it from all aspects: bad design, fragile,...
Anyway, good luck.
Meewong, I was in Hong Kong Plaza (Saipo) yesterday and saw the A80 (without the extras) for 13,888rmb floor price. I would imagine that it could have been found CHEAPER in China, if we take 5% currency difference between HKD and RMB...But you did a pretty good deal. Bought a TV card myself the other day for some 70usd. Good stuff...And yes, Fortress rules. |

You can also try Windsor House in Causeway Bay, the top few floors is a computer mall. A lot of the shops up there are authorized retailers so you don't need to worry about buying anything defective. One thing you might want to keep in mind is that the warranty of laptop bought in Hong Kong may not cover China - remember to check this out. |

I finally got an IBM thinkpad T43 top of range for 16,300. They didn't have it in shops but got it to me in time before i left.
I checked out Fortress, Star market and broadway and found Broadway guys to be the best for price and service. They were the only ones who could get it to me in time, and cut the price a bit as well as throwing in some freebies.
So far very happy... slick and sturdy. |
