Post subject: 1st time in SH, pls give recommendations!

HK-chinese, travelling to SH for training for a couple of days starting on 23rd, never been in SH b4, would luv to look around tho can only go sight-seeing after 6pm, any must-go places u guys recomment?

nanjing walking street, jinmao tower, the bund, pudong tv tower, xintandi, plenty of places, look at other posts in this forum... for many many ideas Smile

yeh thanks sinned69, i kno my question is very typical...since i dun only 5 evenings to spend i jus wanted to pick some core places to go!
now checking the night-life & livestyle forum, interesting! Smile

I have not been inside the Pearl TV tower, but I here it is not worth it. Better just go to the bund and look at it instead of paying the 100RMB to go inside. I have also heard bad reviews about the sightseeing tunnel. What I do recommend though is the Shanghai Museum, but if you can't do anything until 6, that will not work since it closes at 5 most days. It realy depends on what kind of things you do for fun. If you like the club seen, you might appreciate Hengshan Rd.

thanks Macheco & mclaren!! i've bought 2 travel guides but none mentioned SH museum! interesting. i'll see if i can leave office early one day to check it out!
Dun think my colleagues in SH are into clubbing & no point going alone, hope i'll get the chance next time Smile

I took lots of tourists around Shanghai and most of the guests kinda like Yuyuen Garden for souvenir shoppings (but they normally closed kinda early??) and Xiang Yang market is a must. Dunno what they like about the place as I often sit outside the market... simply cant stand people pull my sleeves for LOLEK, BEK, DVD, etc!!

I had my date in Shanghai Museum, it could be quite romantic. Trust me... Razz

Xin Tian Di for dinner would be nice for sure.

HK-Chinese, hm??? Yuyuen en Xiangyang are out of your list then. Maybe stick with what sinned69's recommendation. It sounds good to me.

the tunnel is worth doing just once, no repeat for that for sure but its makes for a kind of interesting way to get across to the other side, dont bother with a return via that tunnel, just jump on the metro or a bus. when on the pudong side in some ways the pudong tv tower is a little over rated, but it would seem a pity to not at least do it once, since you going to be here anyway. but dont go on the weekend the place is crazy, and while the lifts (elevators) are super speedy one ends up having to stand in long queues to get from one level to the next. (there are 3 viewing levels) id suggest just going straight for the top. also dont forget to head for jinmao tower, ofcourse you could do an evening restaurant trip there to make it worth the while and combine a view with dinner (though naturally its a little pricey, its still worth doing once). as for the night life, hit tongren lu, by jingansi (jingan temple on line 1) you will find loads fo bars and ppl there, and if you dont like to go into a bar alone then hit somewhere not so threatening like o'malleys or the blarney stone which you can find the adresses to, using this site or others but to give you a hint you'd get off line 1 at changshu lu and they're within walking distance. ofcourse there are loads of other bars that are just as approachable to a single bloke (so hold all the prοtests im not plugging one bar above any other [cant stand that myself]) as for the xiangyang market just off huahhai zhong lu, sure, go there and have a wander and squander a few bucks... but go during the week. to me its a bit over rated IMO. if you want clothing then try other places like Haining lu just north about 1km from (nanjing dong lu) nanjing walking st, travel north on (henan zhong lu) middle or central henan rd [middle and central have similar translations so you might read middle on a map or roadsign but then see central on another] just adds to the confusion of china LOL.

also hit duolon lu off north sichuan rd (sichuan bei lu) its meant to be a preserved traditional shanghai street (actually its kind of reconstructed) there you will find loads of little cafes, a couple of bars some restaurants, even a coffee house that plays old time movies in chinese only and if you poke around the small side lanes plenty of little curiosities and places to eat.. so there really is so much to see and do... i could go on, but...

oh and yuyuan garden is as commercialised as one can get... too over rated, i simply ride thru that place on my bike travels, too many people... try going there after midnight -now thats a contrast... as is alot/most of shanghai.

office's just a few blocks away form Jingan temple station! grreat! i'll try to pick up some hot SH dudes after work then hahahah....only JKKKK! i'm gonna get to as many places u guys have put down as possible and make a thorough report when i get back Smile

You can also pick up a tourist map from any of the larger hotels with places of interest on them.

Damn Macheo, you paid 100RMB to go into some ball? I paid 50RMB... but this was 4 years ago, a 100% hike is really a rip off, don't you think?

that tunnel is totally a tourist trap. for the amount of money paid, it's really a piece of crap. it was so slow and only have some cheasy neon lights to see. i would never recommand anyone to go through it, unless you are just really bored. best choice is go across the river with the ferry. it was 0.50rmb about 3 and half years ago, how about now? maybe a dollar now... still, what a bargin! you get to see both pudong and puxi... vintage and modern.

i agree to some extent -though special & beautiful are very subjective, what you might find awesome/special to look at might leave another scratching their head 'wondering whats the big deal with that' or 'so what'

IMO it takes time to become accustomed to the transportation, the people, currency, language, so many things, but when a person who has never been here wants to see something of interest and they are limited by time they have here, then at first the major sites are some of the ones to go to see as they are the easiest to find. ideally what i do & would suggest is to simply walk or cycle around or even jump on a bus and go to the end of that buses journey, with a great map, some langauge ability, and having a good sense of direction... but not everyone has these things or the time to acclimitize to the new surroundings... no matter where it is. i know and have been many many places usually using my bike, i have cycled around 150km in one day just sightseeing. i know i have been some places that not even many chinese ppl here in shanghai have ever been. but to describe where and how to get there... too difficult.

anyway Ababay where do you suggest? and please dont just type down the name of somewhere, you need to be able to explain how to get there &/or find it easily so that someone who has never been to shanghai can find it.

i know at the beginning , maybe visiting some local special places is difficult here, but i really do hope all of you come here can enjoy a lot not only the common place many travellers have been, because shanghai is a tremendous place, even in detail small place, just enjoy this,and you will find a lot of fun ,anyway ,i will think it over and tell you something about details ,because i am just making plans for my german colleages ,i don't want them only sitting at home ,watching dvds each weekends, if you need help ,i also do like to help ,for i think i am the hostree in shanghai, i have the duty ,just enjoy your life here+_+
