| Post subject: importing used/own car from overseas to Shanghai |
I would like to import my car from Belgium to Shanghai, as it is only 2 years old. Does anyone know how to go about this, procedures, costs. Is it taxed or can i import it as personal goods? |

Unless you are a diplomat, the CEO of your company or maybe in the army, I don't think you can bring your own car in.... That's what I remember from my relocation agent. Suggest you call any agency up to check. |

last i checked, second hand cars were not allowed to be imprted b/c they are trying to prevent other country's salvage ending up here. That said, i know people have done it but only with really good govt connections. So, if you are coming as a diplomat or a well connected business person tit can be done. might be more challenging if not, but I do wish you luck. New cars are easier but remember that the tax on the cars will be based on what China customs deems your car is worth (local market value) , not what you may have paid. You will need import quota and import permission, then a fee for the licensing / plate. Good luck! |

as yu888 has said, unless u have guanxi, then its almost impossible. i am guessing you dont speak/read/write chinese -even if you were able to import your vehicle the cost to do so would be prohibitive as all invloved in the porocess will take their slice out of it/you. $$$
There might be another way and that involves looking at a temp import using a carnet whereby you are allowed to bring a vehicle into a country temporarily having posted a bond back in your home country [the bond being a certain % of the value of your vehicle].
Temporary Exportation. A Carnet is a way to temporarily take a private road vehicle to another country without having to pay duty. If you have not returned the vehicle back into your home country or applied/granted an extension then you will forefit the bond to the country that you imported the vehicle into. you should find such info by contacting a motoring orgainsation in your home country eg. automobile association. |

Why bother? If you bring it in it will be wrecked in a short time anyway. Just buy one here for very little money and it would also be good to get over this obsession with "it must be new". |
