| Post subject: auto accident in shanghai... |
I have a 4 year old who here at home uses a care seat. I can't see carrying the car seat around with me every where I go so that when we take a taxi he has a car seat...
Are there many accidents in shanghai? How fast does the trafic go? what do others to in this situation?
I keep on hearing how bad the trafic is and how crazy the drivers are... I don't want my guy getting hurt.

Hold you breath and say your prayers- welcome to parenthood in Shanghai!
Car seats are not practical in taxis since very few of them even have seatbelts in the backseat. The best bet is to hire a car/driver...if this expensive option is not feasible, then you just learn how to tell the driver to slow it down and to avoid the highways. Also, you'll learn how to tell him not to run the red lights in Chinese! |

Actually, it's not so bad. The traffic generally moves quite slowly and although the taxi drivers may seen reckless, on the whole they are quite skillful. The most dangerous are those younger private drivers with money for a car, but no experience.
Taxi drivers get experience on-the-job, but the driving experience of most private drivers is little.
It's probably more dangerous walking than driving. Car drivers don't give pedestrians right-of-way. This is compounded by pedestrians jay walking all the time. The police will be commencing a 5-month crackdown on jay walking from 2006-06-01 (after the fines for such offence just sky rocketed from RMB5 to RMB50!). If it doesn't stop jay walking (probable), then at least it will raise some voluntary taxes.
I drive in Shanghai and as long as I drive defensively and expect the unexpected, it is OK. |
