| Post subject: 2 weeks, where to go in china? |
hello! I am planning a trip in a few weeks. I am flying/taking train to Beijing and meeting a friend there. We will travel around maybe 2 weeks (we are both flexible, and end up back in Shanghai (he will continue on to other countries from here).
To point out the obvious, China is huge. How best to decide where to go? My friend is into history, i am more into nature and culture. [i do like history, but no desire to be stuck in museums, or walking around a place that is full of 'oh, imagine what this used to look like' places (ie: Nanjing...)]
I am looking to do this on the cheap side, with a few splurges allowable when needed. Any favorite places? Any suggestions on route? Any travel tips? Thanks for any help!!
oh, also, best place to find cheap domestic airfare? |

Yunnan province.. Kuming, Dali, LiJiang. every single person who has told they have been there has loved it. Maybe second would be Guilin and Yangshou. - but you will have do quite a bit of air travel to do those. |

I am not fond of seeing loads of historical things, temples, old-towns etc... but Xian was really a great experience. No more than two days is needed to see everything (although it does pretty much require a flight to get there). The Terracota Warriors are interesting and the excavation site is very well done. There is also a museum, which is one of the most interesting museums I have seen (I like museums, usually once is enough for me, unless there is a great exhibit... but don't get me wrong, I don't hold museum memeberships or anything).
Yes, it can be a bit touristy, but in this case, it was worth it. |

Peking, Xi'an, Guilin, Hangzhou...hmm...maybe Dunhuang if you do have some spare time. I like Gu Lang Yu in Fujijan province. Too much to see in two weeks.

I agree with Michael that Yunnan is a great place to visit. Good sights, good food nice people and good weather. Lijiang is a little touristy but well worth 3 days or so.
Magnolia is right that Xian is worth a visit. The Terracotta Warriors are quite spectacular and it has lots of other history but other than that I didn't like the city much so I wouldn't arrange to spend too much time there. |

Terracotta Warriors were a major disappointment for me.

Any particular reason? I thought they were better than I expected them to be. |

I found they were bogged down by the building infrastructures. Not properly displayed to create a moving feeling when strolling among these great warriors. Being kept miles away from the scene doesnt help.

are nyou kiddind the terracota warriora are unbelievable.
these kind off things do not get doscovered every day you know,
the sheer scale off it and the art work is amazing.
i spent 6 hours there,i went back into the musuem twice as it is so overpowering
xian its self is nothing f specail at all, myebe 2 ooo years ago but not now.
worth the money sorry aqua girl its some off the best money spent in china it really is a wonder of the world,,take your time ,dont hurry around.
i tell you what was amazing for me,if the farmer had dug 6 inches to the side it would never have been discovered,as the well he was looking for was rin the edge of the tomb
there is also a fantastic exhibition on han and roman artifacts
hey i,m just a normal wee laddie froma working class background ,i,m no into musuems as much, but come on we are talking something THAT IS WELL WORTH SEEING
some people have no apprecaition value what so ever, and i am not saying because it is old it has to be apprecaited, just the fact that every face is individual is awesome in it s self |

take a binocular for the main pit,,it is overwhelming in size
take binoculars ,but you can get up close to individual warriors of different rank and standing
try making one yerself and see how dissappointing they are/ |

ok, ok it does sound cool! and i do want to see them, just as i want to, no, NEED to see the great wall. i can still do all those things. but maybe i should plan them for a separate trip. those sound easier to manage for a long weekend, or maybe a week.
i am just wondering if i should take advantage of this time (while i do not have a full time job, and do have a travel companion) to go somewhere farther out....
i am still living in shanghai. this is not a final trip or anything. but i do not know how much more major travel i will do after this. hence, what is the best of the best....? |

of course, Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Mongolia are all on my list as well.... guess i better start earning some travel money! |

If you're planning to go far away from Shangahi, it could be cheaper to go to Thailand! As an alternative, go to Thailand for 4-6 days, come back to Shanghai to take a break, spend 2-3 days in Hangzhou or Suzhou. The whole trip(s) might end up cheaper travelling in China. |
