While I won't call it great, the steaks at Jack's Place are passable. Pricing is cheap, service is friendly and there are other things from which to select. I caution you to stay far, far away from the chicken soup... it was the scariest excuse for a soup I have ever encountered... literally nothing more than flour and water mixed together with a few chicken chunks tossed in.
Not somewhere I would go every week, but it is nice to know that it is around. |

for you homecooking guys:
City Supermarket carries great fresh local Chinese beef fillet from HUA AN at reasonable prices (30-40RMB for two nice pieces). Quality is great. Check for HUA AN on label.
I fry it with some onions and potato and sourcream as a side dish. Great.
Cheers,

come along to the Shanghaiexpat BBQ @ Senses this coming Sunday 26th. From 2.00pm onwards.
We honestly have the best local steak in town. This is no exaggeration. Come and try, if you like, the supplier, who is the wife of someone on this site, can deliver for you. Great prices too.
I am Aussie, and this steak is very close to what we get back home. |

Don't think much of Steak King. The prices are low, but so is the quality. The meat has that awful rubbery texture - probably something to do with being injected with water and drowned in tenderising powder.
Haven't tried Jake's Place.
Bullfighter has cheap steaks. Only 70RMB or so for a 220gm fillet steak (plus salad, soup, bread and a surprisingly decent coffee), but again the quality is poor.
At the supermarket you can try Qingdao or Hua'an. The quality of the Qingdao meat is very variable. I've sometimes bought some really horrible pieces. But it seems to be more consistent if you buy it at the supermarkets with lots of foreign shoppers (i.e. the Japaese one in the mall by Jing'an Temple, the Gubei Carefor etc.). Occasionally you will find Qingdao meat labelled 'top grade' in Chinese, but they price this 'top grade' the same as imported meat so I guess you can't win.
I've hardly ever seen deer meat around Shanghai. Guess it is more a northern thing. |

i want to give a mention to the wife of one of the members on the site , that mat has brought up.
I get my steaks from them, they're tip top ( the steaks as well as the people ) and a steak made at home is hard to beat by any restaurant... |

Thanks for all the comment. I'm the new Director in charge of Jack's Place in Shanghai. Just making a survey on which restaurant serve great steak.
I would be proud to suggest that you try our steak at Nanjing Xi Lu. I have work with my chef to ensure we buy only chill local tenderloin and not the cheap stuff. Our steak set meal start from RMB38. We will get the lot, soup, garlic bread, coffee, dessert.....with 39 years of serving great steak.
If you want to try, call me on 13917245186,Anthony would glad to offer some complimenary. |

"...local tenderloin and not the cheap stuff..."
gimme a break.... can you get any cheaper then domestic PRC beef? RMB39 for a steak.... what quality can you serve.....
talking about great steaks? get some chilled Australian Certified Angus Beef, Grainfed Beef or Waygu Beef.
unfortunately the import of USDA Prime / Choice and Certified Angus Beef is still banned (BSE case in december 2003).
get the top quality aged import beef and we can talk steaks!

with 39 years experience in knowing beef. we can ensure that you get the best. That is why it's better for you to try and not to view it with a mind set that all local beef are bad.
I have live in Australia for the past 14 years and there is not a lot of good beef there. And the price, it going off the roof.
call me and you can try it for free on me. |
