A bit disappointed. After some good matches mostly with foreigners the locals just withdrew from the pitch after being called again for the all basic 3 second violation. I find it interesting that the locals refuse to play the game like it should and put everybody's safety at stake by sitting in the key like a wrecked ship. Result: 8 people sitting in the key, clogging it all up and worse yet, risking everybody's knees and ankles by falling on each other's foot due to congestion. Granted, twisted knee myself last time.
In any case, withdrawing just because you are called for something so basic is such a childish behaviour. Dikheads. |

It was disappointing... I was a bit tired and it was pretty well time for me to head home anyway. Hopefully someone will explain the purpose of not standing around in the key so that we get some decent games in again! Hanging out under the net the whole time definitely causes lots of unnecessary contact. I'm heading back home for a few weeks tomorrow, but when I return I hope to get some more games in.

Hey guys,
Pizarro, I was reading the threads and I couldn't help noticing that your post dated May 18 (I was out of town) mentioned that you're a spanish guy but your post dated May 25 said that you're Canadian. So which is it? It may (or may not) help me identify you on the court.
Anyway, I've been in touch with Monk and will be playing tomorrow at his "private" court (hope it's good, monk!). Unfortunately he has a bad sprain though I still hope to see him there. Whoever is playing tomorrow, see you guys there!
p/s: Maybe we should also pray that it's not raining tomorrow. Our collective prayers may shift the rain clouds that have been hanging over Shanghai for the past 2 days |

Sprained my knee badly thanks for a congested key as locals dont respect 3 seconds in the key rule. So, won't be there. But glad to see more people going.
Hope to see you in 2 weeks time. |

streetball vs half-court - this is how i see it...
streetball
- pass it to me
- i'll just stand here, where's the ball?
- i'll jack it up no wukas
- fk my team, i'll get it done
- i'll look good
- i'm a cr@p playa
half-court
- keep moving
- picks, rolls, backdoors
- move into space
- move the ball not the man
- isolate, then burn
- get clean buckets
as my mate would say - its a little from column a , and a little from column b...
I'd prefer more of column b myself.
Ball education is what is lacking - but do you want to be educated or not...?
Expectations are another problem.
Will you call it hard, or just what will suit you at the time?
Will the game suit you, or will you change it for what you want?
That's why streetball is easy. Anything goes. So keep your expectations low.
Half-court is a much tougher prospect to get your head around, but much more rewarding play.

Hey Henry_Chinaski, crikey,
The way I see it, getting them to appreciate and respect the rules would be near impossible from what you've described. So we might as well get our team together, shoot the daylight out of them (not expecting tight defense since they're piling on top of themselves in the key) and shout "Next team!" |

Hey interesting thread guys. I was in Shanghai in May and was damn keen to get some b'ball action but the courts were packed. During my last week, my fiancee's cousin suggested we go and hire a court from a school. So we did - grabbed a few of his mates and had a great game of five on five (with fifteen turning up). Two days later we did the same thing and thirty people turned up - word obviously got around (but we made a profit with everyone forking out 10RMB !!)
I'm back in Oz now and will be heading back in September for a two year stint with my work. In Sydney i've been able to organise small comps with guys that just get themselves organised into teams of 6 or 7 and play other teams. Over the course of about 2 years we have 7 teams and play weekly games for 9 week stretches. We just apporached a school and entered into a long term hire arrangement with them. Although it's informal, there's a sense of organisation and comeptition about it. It helped that I am a registered referee in Oz (and yes I refereed most of the games).
Would you guys be keen with doing something similar in Shanghai - could be called the SBDL . Starts as a small rabble but would turn into a small social league. Costs would be for court hire only. |

will8888...
sounds cool. i've been meeting more and more people interested in this type of match - away from the streetball rack it ups.
GuyInTown...
Well yeah, but no, but yeah. getting wiped on court either makes you want to compete harder, or go home. from my experience, its all about competition here. most of the local streetballers are fast learners.
Gotta set the rules, call fair fouls and violations, respect your team and opposition. If there's a confrontation or disagreement, I reckon we go the way of ultimate disc. Reset it, give it back to the offense team.
Its not pro ball, its a pick up match. No one should get injured, no one should get pissed off, no one should get aggreivated.
Its not quite there yet in my opinion |

Anyway, I'm back in Canada for personal reasons so you won't be seeing me anyway.
A Shanghai basketball league sounds good. I know there is one already though. You guys might check into registering a Shanghai Expat team. I would love to be there to run the point, but I won't be coming back until September at the earliest.
Take care and keep on balling. I sure am. |

will8888,
Great! Lets talk more about this when you're back in Shanghai. A more formal set up would be more fun and challenging.
crikey,
Yeap, the game should be played in the spirit of sportsmanship & having fun. However, if the other people don't want to do that then it's not really much fun. I suppose you usually play in XuJiaHui? Last night I had my first game of basketball in Shanghai with Monk and his pals. My endurance is a long way from where it used to be but should get better with more games... lets play together sometime!
Pizarro,
I was looking forward to playing bball with you... 3 months later then I suppose... |

i was there too... i wouldn't play at Xujiahui for the rabble cr@p ball reason. that's why monk's place is better.
i think its unreasonable to expect high quality play from every player who turns up. its going to be variable. its not a league, its half-court. the skill and ball IQ level will vary. You should expect that. i agree its much more fun to play a constructed match, so a little ball IQ goes a long way. You've gotta start somewhere with this.
another thing to consider is that its a private court with invited people, friends, colleagues. its a social situation. bad blood in this situation is not cool.

there are outdoor courts at 803 Xi Zhang Bei Lu (Just north of Zhong Xing Lu) That are always empty. Just go through the gate, and they're about 50 meeters up and on your left. If your going to start up a little 'league' i reccomend creating a group page for it where you can get easier advertising to help bring out more people. |

Hey all -- your comments are accurate and I think we can work on a way to improve the accuracy of fouls/violations. The quality of play or "ball IQ" is improving as we play more and strss these secondary skills (i.e. all skills besides shooting, heh). Anyway, we are still playing every Thursday and Sunday at 7. See you there! |

Roeder and everyone,
We're still playing tonight at 7 and Saturday at 7. Anyone who wants to come should PM me and I'll send you my mobile number.
The court is right next to the Xinzha Lu subway stop but it's hard to actually get to it. The easiest way to find us is to come out of the subway stop, walk down Xinzha Road to Xinchang Road (there is a map of the area inside the subway stop to help you), and look for a single residential high-rise building (not a whole block, just one building). Turn down Xinchang Road and pass the high-rise's entrance. Just past that you will see a lighted basketball court behind a fence. Just shout for us and one of us will tell you how to get in.
We'll have a ball, no need to bring one unless yours is really deluxe. |

Had fun last night, though there were some bad calls & some not too gentlemanly behaviours...
I suggest those of us who play regularly chip in for the lighting cost. It's not fair for Monk to pay for it everytime we go to his place. As I recall, it's something like 10 bucks an hour so if there're 10 of us (including the locals) and we each contribute 10 bucks, we've a pool of money that's enough for like 5 sessions. What do you think? |
