SenorJay- Alright!! Three out of for places you mentioned, I have lived in and are places that I totally identify with. (i've never been to alaska). I totally agree with you about these places. Naturally, one can't say that EVERYBODY in these places is non-materialistic and not a hypocrite. But I agree that in general, it's true. Maybe it's the sheer number of trees and nature in these places. Really chills you out.
but thanks for affirming that the places that I come from are completely outstanding places. |

yu888, I was just surprised that you are an American and haven't heard any guff here yet, especially since you can speak Chinese. I'm guessing you're a girl. If I was a Chinese person I'd probably feel less inclined to confront an American woman about political matters. I mean I know how intimidated they are by foreign women, not that you can kick ass or anything, you just have the tits and ass and curves that they can't fathom and whether you like it ofr not it makes them tongue-tied.
jenming that's really cool that you've grown up around the trees. Me, I come from San Diego but I've been up in Northern California several times. My sister lives up in Spokane and she tells me about it and it seems very cool and laid back. I ran into the last of the Moheekan hippies on the Big Island. They've retired society altogether, (since the 70's) living in a primitive way (very monkish) and continue living there, over-looking the blue seas and picking home-grown coffee beans for survival. I know several people who have spent time in Alaska and from what they said people are pretty cool there as well. Bowling For Columbine was pretty pro-Canada but I ain't even thinking Canada, especially after knowing how right-on the west coast is. This chick is obviously from a small thinking town.
Nick-la, do you think I haven't made an effort here? Do you think I'm blowing the chance to help people understand from the inside? Let me give you an example of what I've dealt with?
I was walking down one of the streets in town when I noticed a girl walking all wobbly like she was drunk supported by two other adults. I stopped to gawk as I rarely see drunk girls walking around the street here in mid-afternoon. It turned out that she was about to have a full on epileptic seizure and was not drunk at all. The man and woman that were holding her at the time were looking embarrassed and finally let her fall to the pavement. The young girl ( about 20) went into a full on seizure and the guardians just backed far away. As this girl was shaking and contorting and spitting and freaking her guardians just slank back in the back of the crowd embarrassed. Anyone who was around gathered in and began gawking at this poor girl trying their best to witness her anguish. There was saliva shooting out of her mouth and her eyes were rolling back in her head and I got down with her and took off my belt and stuck it in her mouth. I laid her head on my lap and stroked her hair waiting for her fit to pass. One of her guardians came over finally and did something weird. This guy stuck his finger in her mouth and pressed some button on the roof of her mouth that immediately caused her fit to end. I was so disgusted at the crowd that I started swinging punches and battering everyone away. I was going around the circle pushing and hitting everyone who was standing around gawking and laughing. Because I had her head in my lap rubbing her head and trying to comfort her this guy, the guy who was with her originally, wanted to pick a fight with me . He thought I was coming on to her or something! A lot of pushing took place and somebody told me the man was her father. The two people (her parents) who were with her laid this poor girl on the pavement in disgust and let her get on with her fit alone while standing in the back of the crowd. They were embarrassed of their daughter and that pretty much summed it up for me here.
I knew after that that this place is ****. No amount of education or knowledge can change this. The way to judge a country is by seeing how they treat the handicapped and from what I see here there aren't many around. Might they be hiding them out of disgust or embarrassment. eeek Face... eeek it long and hard.... |

I don't plan to renounce my citizenship anytime in the future, but I'll keep the travel ideas in mind. Northern California is beautiful and liberal, but quite expensive. I'd live there in a heartbeat if I could afford it.
Please also note that I said the POLITICAL CULTURE was rooted in hypocrisy and materialism, not the entire country. |

omg, I can totally relate to this. Last summer, I visited China for 2 month and at the end of the trip, my friend was driving me to Pudong airport from Nanjing. On the Nanjing-Shanghai highway, we hit a couple of pretty nasty thunderstorms and all of a sudden there was a traffic jam on a usually not-so-busy highway. We drove a couple of km in the stop-and-go traffic and came upon a wreck. The car had apparently spun out of control and hit the center divide. It was in horrible shape, a pile of smoking and twisted metal. I could see 4 people in there and they did not look too good. What surprised me was that of all the cars that are passing by, not a single one pulled over to help them. My friend and his driver simply commented "look at that, they must have been going very fast" as if it were some kind of show and then continued on without a second thought. I said "we should stop and help them" and the driver just rolled his eyes and said "bu yao zhao ma fan (don't look for trouble), and it's still raining" And my friend added "we are late, you might miss your flight." Those comments made me hopping mad and I screamed at them to stop. The driver finally pulled over to the shoulder and backed up. I told him to call the police and grabbed my friend to help the people in the car. One of them was unconscious and two others were bleeding. We carried the unconscious one accross the highway and laid her on the grass then helped the other 3 out of the car. While we were crossing the right lane (the left lane blocked by the wreck), some cars actually honked at us and gave us dirty looks, and yelled at us to hurry up and get out of their way. I swear if I weren't holding the injured people, I would have smashed some windows and broken some noses. This whole incident totally shook my faith in the chinese people.
I'm a chinese american. I went to elementary school in China and remember all those lessons about being a good samaritan. I see it in practice in the west all the time, yet in China it's surprisingly absent. What happened? This complete lack of respect and caring for their own people and fellow human beings is disgusting. That day, for the first time in my life, I was ashamed of my heritage.
It's also interesting that you experienced such strong anti-american sentiments. When I was over there, I didn't see much of it. It often came up in conversations that I tell people (mostly college students, and most are strangers I met at bars) I'm from the US and how much I like living in the US and how politically I'm more aligned with the US than China. This often brought up heated political discussions about democracy, economics, human rights, history, etc, but rarely have I encountered the words "hate americans". Perhaps it was because this was before the Iraqi war, or that I'm a chinese. It'll be interesting to see what kind of response I'll get when I visit China next summer. |

There was a woman attacked outside her apartment building one night. The man beat beat and raped her. During the attack, several lights in the building went on as this poor woman's neighbors watched the attack. Not one of them bothered calling the police. Over thirty neighbors saw some part of the attack. In fact, the attacker saw the lights, got scared and hid. When he realized the police weren't coming, he finished her off.
The victim was Kitty Genovese (sp). This happened in New York in the late 1960's. This attack spawned a great deal of socia psychological research on prosocial (helping) behavior. What you saw on the highway could have happened anywhere. In an emergency, people tend to assume that somebody else will take action. You should not make value judgements about a foreign cultures based on a single experience. |
