Portfolio theory or valuation theory (including stocks, bonds, property, etc.)? I have seen finance books that discuss portfolio theory and how to calculate overall portfolio risk so that you can be sure that you are not investing in all of the same cyclical investments, for example. If this is what you are looking for, any uni level finance book should have it...

Maybe at a University in Shanghai? I don't know about others, but the bookstore here at CEIBS has a bunch of english language business books, however, I have no idea how much they cost. But they're also expensive in the US, at least for the real textbook kind.

Try this unconventional technique:

1-find your topic at wikipedia
2-note down related links and authors they recommend (saying this just because I trust wikipedia's judgement)
3-try to find PDF versions and/or chapters from each recommended book in Soulseek, Bit Torrent or if everything else fails, Amazon
4-Buy the one you find more confortable with

Just a suggestion...

Might work...

Or not.

I remember the work of Dr. Harry Markowitz, when I was doing my commodity futures accreditation. Can't remember the exact title though. Maybe a google search on that name yields results in combination with 'ebook'. More and more books are available as ebooks on services like WinMX and the like. HC's suggestions sound good.

Soulseek, Bit Torrent and WinMX are all softwares to download goodies from the net. From books to movies, you can find things you never thought they existed before.

Should be present in every single desktop in fact.

For the fundamentals, I would advise you:
-Investments Sixth Edition by William Sharpe and G. Alexander and J. Bailey
Portfolio Analysis is at chapter 7 with the Markowitz Model well explained in the appendix A.
The books cover everything in investments , going from an overview of the security markets to the CAPM and the arbitrage pricing theory, bond portfolio management, common stock and their valuation, futures and options, financial analysis and much more.
You can get it at RMB88 (not including discount) at most bookstores that offer english and economics manuals, especially near or inside universities in Shanghai, in the metro or in Fuzhou Rd.
