Post subject: The real meaning of "Wai Guo Ren"

The term gets translated as "foreigner." If we break it apart literally we see it means "Outside Country Person". We tend to look at "wai guo ren" as the English equivalent to "foreigner", but I don't believe this to be true.
I was sitting with a group of Chinese in California a few years ago. They were speaking Chinese to each other and were talking about about some Americans calling them "wai guo ren." So here we are in America, where these Chinese people, who haven't lived in the US for too long, are calling native born Americans wai guo ren. Obviously, the people they were referring to were not "foreigners."
You rarely, if ever, hear Chinese people call africans wai guo ren, or Japanese or Koreans wai guo ren. Africans are fei zhou ren and Japanese are ri ben ren. So what does the term "wai guo ren" truly mean.

I believe, it means your stereotypical middle to upper class caucasian westerner. Doesn't that make sense to you?

when a chinese goes abroad, waiguoren in his mouth means non-chinese or white ppl.

It doesn't mean foreigner. Foreigner just means someone living in a country or visiting a country that is not from there. The term wai guo ren is different.
