Post subject: World of Warcraft in China

Hi, I've been playing WoW on the US servers from China for almost a year now, even though the connection isn't too bad using China Netcom. The experience is not the same when playing during the servers' off-hours.

So I've started a new account on the Chinese servers and am now playing in Area 1, on Ku De Lan Server. If you'd like more info on playing in China then you can contact me @ greiferforum at lolstfu dot net. There are a few of us already started or in the process of signing up.

btw, it IS possible to play using the English client on the Chinese servers, however this does not come without meeting certain conditions. I've prepared a writeup on modding the English client here: http://oblivion.lolstfu.net/articles/moddingwow.htm

BTW, I'm on Alliance on Ku De Lan (PVP) Server, Medium pop.

Quality.
I tried to set it up before, but failed as there is no app yet for Mac Computers, to make it work playing in English on China Servers.
Have you got an idea where I could find one ?

I am getting great connection to WoW US Servers on my 2Mbps China Telecom ADSL which usually pings around 300ms (this is better than when I was in Australia!

Does this modding of the English WoW to play the chinese servers stop your from using the US Servers?

For the time being I'm playing WoW using the Chinese client because US and China are running different versions at the moment. And I don't expect them to 'sync' up again for maybe another two weeks, so for the time being I can only play it in Chinese. So IF your considering playing in China you should accept the fact that there will be times when you can only play using the Chinese client, otherwise it will be a frustrating experience. My Chinese literacy rate is perhaps 30%, I can't understand the description for quests, items, spells, but I can still play mainly because I remember some of the quests from the US servers and because I know the fastest way to level is to just grind. Also thottbot.com is my friend. This is a PVP server btw, and being on on prime-time there should be no shortage of people to grief.

I haven't looked for a solution to the Mac, but I'm guessing that if the directory setup is the same then the mod could be made in the same way. But don't try it if you aren't feeling adventurous.

I've installed the Chinese and US version on the same computer and I can still get on the US server with no problem. I've even run them both (sortof like dual-box I guess) and connected to the US and China at the same time. The only thing here is you have to pay attention to the patching process. Specifically, make sure when your client is being patched that your 'Blizzard Entertainment' registry entry is pointing to the right folder.

I used to have Telecom but that got me +1000 ping to the US, thus I switced to Netcom which gave me ~300 ping. You're lucky if you can get consistent 300 from Telecom, nobody I know has gotten that with them. And if they do get 300 with Telecom, it's only for a brief period.

To install the Chinese version, you can buy the set of CDs for 50RMB, which come with a CD-KEY and 20 hours. OR you could DL the install files from their official site www.wowchina.com and then go out and buy a 30RMB WoW charge card which can be converted to a CD-KEY + 20 hours. After the CD-KEY has been activated, each 30RMB charge will give you 60 hours of playtime. And this is probably my favorite aspect of the Chinese WoW. All my alts will be on a separate accounts, and dual-boxing will be cheap and efficient. US subcription will be at least $15USD a month.

Sorry for being so long-winded, but I wanted to make sure the details were clear.

I played Dark Age of Camelot for almost 3 years... but moving to China forced me to end my addiction due to poor connectivity. I've been wondering what other games worked here (without having to buy the game first). Can anyone who has played WoW give me a link to server ip's so I can test my home connection?

The WoW US login server is at 12.129.133.92, the rest is behind their firewall so you can't do anything with them. According to their help, packets may also be blocked by the firewall at 12.123.0.37

Slightly offtopic : I found this article and thought it was pretty funny.

http://www.gameusd.com/news0730.htm

Both Azeroth Gold and Norrath Gold pieces are both being depreciated against the USD.
So if you have lots of loot you should probably sell them soon before the exchange rates
get worst.

This is legit. I don't do it myself but I know people who've made lots of money on trading
WoW and EQ stuff in the real world.

I find it funny that Azeroth Gold Marks has a better exchange rate than the depreciated RMB. 10AGM=1USD

bump

btw, as my friend mentioned, for the price of one US CD-KEY, you could have 12 CD-KEYS here. And the most I pay a month here is $6 USD since I don't expect to log more than 120 hours, while trying maintain a job and a life.

Ubertroy, I'll mess around and see if I can't play with the Chinese client but in English. Ideally this would be the best solution, since as of patch 1.8 the hack I posted earlier doesn't seem to be working correctly (ie. blank quest descriptions, blank item names, blank NPC names). I'll post here whatever I find.

stokamos, and any others wanting to play from another country, I don't mind purchasing the cards and sending you the information by email provided you pay in advance for the card as well as the Paypal transaction fee (usually ~3% of the transfer). You can email me to work out further details.

ubertoy, fsyin505:

Something I did, you have to start from a fresh install though, so kiss your savedvariables.lua goodbye. I installed CWoW first, downloaded and installed all the updates, renamed the reg key to Blizzard Entertainment CN then installed the US client. Don't change anything yet. Run US WoW and sign in using any old username or password so the client does a server check, this will prompt patch downloads and installs since it's a pain in the arse to find them separately. After this is done, WITHOUT changing ANYTHING, run CWoW. Yes, it will work even though we haven't renamed the reg key appropriately.

Given you haven't previously logged in with your character, everything will be pulled from the US client database and pushed into the Chinese client. Names come up in both English and Chinese, quests are given in English, names of places and areas are now in English, item names and AH is in English ALTHOUGH, some item descriptions are still in Chinese, such as symbols for stat modifiers, durations, etc. Good luck and happy WoWing. This way you get Chinese characters if you understand some. Only downside is that some AddOns don't work properly in CWoW since CWoW seems to use different triggers for events and the combat log is in Chinese.

I'm sure there's got to be an easy way to do this like replacing local DBs or pointers or something, but I'm too lazy to be bothered about it. I just do a fresh install whenever there's a patch.

After doing this, I prefer using the US client simply to have the addons working properly. I can't remember most Chinese names anyway since I usually get pelted with "Can we be friends?" from mostly everyone I meet.

Would anybody have any information about Lineage 2? Similar to what is being discussed about logging on a Chinese WoW server using an American client.

I read into what ChaoKnign suggested, and it's another method to get the same results as the instruction in the original post.

And for the current patch, 1.71, neither method is working. Blizzard must have changed something in their data .MPQ files that's adversely affecting this hack. The hack still allows me to log into CN servers with the EN client, but all item names are blank. The item _properties_ still display normally though (ex. "Armor 100, Leather", "Intellect +5", "Use: Restores 300 HP", etc.), just their names are blank. Quest name and text in my quest log is completely blank. NPC text is blank, and NPC names are blank as well. Seems the only thing that is still helpful using the English client is spell icon names and descriptions which display in full.

My answer for those who want to play in China but are not fully literate:
grinding is the fastest way to level anyways, and
www.thottbot.com

...but I am still searching for a better way.

Hi,

Can someone please tell me a chainstore etc where you can buy WoWChina and time cards. A friend of mine from Taiwan will be in china soon and will pick some up for me so I can play (I'm a Chinese lang student so thought it might be fun). She is concerned about accidentally getting a fake copy.

Thanks.

Small stores that sell phone cards will usually carry these as well. Also, most internet cafes will sell these cards as well. These stores are everywhere; subways, street vendors, convenience stores, etc. I have not heard of fake cards selling and I don't think that should be a problem.
The client itself can be downloaded for wowchina.com , or you can buy the boxed set from the same places that sell the cards

OK, 1.8 patch works with the English client! And here's the quick start instruction:

Assuming you've already installed both the English and Chinese client, and both clients are patched to 1.8:

1. copy and backup the following 3 files in your Enlish Warcraft directory:
C:\World of Warcraft\Data\base.mpq
C:\World of Warcraft\realmlist.wtf
C:\World of Warcraft\WTF\config.wtf
easiest/fastest way to do this is to select the file -> CNTRL-C -> CNTRL-V -> done.

2. go to your Chinese Warcraft directory and copy (CNTRL-C) the Launch.exe file

3. go back to the English directory and paste the Launch.exe file you just copied.

4. click the launch.exe program to start, and you're in!

Sign in with your chinese login, it'll then ask what if you want to connect to US server. Instead, just click on suggest realm -> view realm list.
You'll see that all the server names are blank, but there will be a number next to one of them. That number is the number of characters you have on the corresponding server. Select that one and you're in.

Hello, I recently moved here to china and have started playing china wow, but I always play at net cafes because my g/f and I like to play it together and we only have 1 computer at home without internet connection. On our home computer I have US WoW installed and have been trying to bring files on a flash drive to the net cafe to try to get my computers WoW to at least show quests in english. If you have any idea's on doing this it would be most helpful. So far my file copying hasn;t worked at all.
I currently play on Ai Lu En server (Alliance), Name: Sprieth

Thank you

i have recently installed this game (chinese and english) playing on a chinese server, first of all

currently the two versions are different (i take it this will mean the english client not being able to play on the chinese servers?)

second if this is the case - is it possible to get more help via the thottbot? - I have only just managed to install it (download the zip and put ALL files in your wow directory) so how much help can it actually provide. I believe it only has support for US or EU servers??

This is good for my character recognition but not so good for the gaming!!

Cheers for any enlightenment,

P.S. I have no clue whats going on (in game) Wink

<EDIT> Ok thankyou fsyin505 I now have the english client working Smile The two games are actually the same versions at the moment!
