We all play it, most of us only when we're pissed as farts : The Air Guitar
Last night was another sad example, when 4 totally pissed up foreigners slid over the floor of one of Shanghais seediest bars, playing Air Guitar...
November Rain, Guns'n Roses...The part when it's pissing down with rain, Axl "P"ose sitting on the piano and Slash standing in top of the piano, playing the electric guitar..Absolute Classic
What else is there ?
Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in the Jar
Deep Purpel - Smoke on the Water
AC/DC - Thunderstruck maybe ?!?!?! |

I prefer The Who live version of Won't Get Fooled Again and Townsend does the scissor-kick thing and ends up falling through the stage.
I've tried this routine in several of Shanghai's bars but usually the floor is made of cement so impossible to fall through unless you have the combined weight of Fidel and Edgewood. |

"Baker Street". Ah, yes, Fidel. Nice memory, that.
I play the bass, although I don't have any talent. Some of my favorite bass riffs were on ancient Doors tunes. Yeah, I know, I'm showing my age. So f*ck it already. We all know I'm an old f*ck.
I actually prefer playing the blues. Simple, forumulaic melodies, but so intense.
Fidel, if you get to Chicago, I'll take you to a REAL blues club. New York ain't got nothin' on us. |

^^ Wow. That's cool biatch. I guess you like some Mingus?
Have you heard about Mark Sandman from this band called Morphine? He played on a two chord bass that he built himself, very odd type.
Goosie I must confess that the more I hate you the more I like you.
Which just proves how great I am to change my opinion after giving it a chance.
As for Air Guitars, an honorable mention goes to Mark Knopfler in Money for Nothing. And Adrian Smith in Wasted Years. |

Goosie: Oddly enough, the Doors didn't HAVE a bass player in the group. They used a few session players on records (Lonnie Mack, the guitar player famous for "Wham!" and a pretty neat instrumental version of "Memphis" was one of them), but Manzarek played all of it on a bass Keyboard for live performances.
If I recall, Wilton Felder, originally a jazz trombonist, was another who played bass for 'em on record.
"Air bass" is MUCH better than "air guitar" or "air sax" in my humble opinion. Makes for much better dance moves.
Also, I might be in Chicago in early October, so does your offer of a blues club tour extend to other ShExpat folks? |

Bluebag, I had no idea. I guess I didn't watch them play, just assumed the bass lines were a bass and not a keyboard. It's not entirely surprising, though, given that they used a lot of keyboard in their tunes. I stand corrected - call me an idiot! Still like the sound, though.
Yes, if you and Fidel come to Chicago, I'll take you to a blues club. They're within walking distance from where I live.
HC, you *sshole, right back at you! Never heard of the names you mentioned, but I'll do a search. |

Henry, when I first posted, I thought of "Money for Nothing" because it's the best bass I can recall ever. But, of course, I was having one of my menopausal moments and couldn't recall the name of that tune - kept coming up with "My MTV". Sh*t. Getting old really sucks.
But thanks for reminding me. And I agree - it's a classic. |
