Post subject: Hotel Lobby Bars - no Ladies of the Night.

I will be coming to Shanghai with an American Customer in September. We are looking at staying at either the Shangri-La in Pudong or the Carlton in Nanjing Road.

Neither of us are in to the Bar/Club Scene, yet would like to be able to sit in the Hotel Lobby bar and have a quiet drink without being harrassed by "Ladies of the Night" , as I have heard reports of this happening in some of the 5 Star Hotels...

Could someone advise if both or either of these hotels will be OK? If neither of them where else should we stay?

In the lobby bars of the two places you mentioned, you will not have a problem.

Or you should consider staying at the Four Seasons -- in my opinion a bit nicer than the two you are considering. Plus has a great steakhouse and a great jazz club on the top floor.

you will be fine as others have mentioned. the ritz does have an escalting problem of such ladies on the streets surrounding the area... but it's not on the property itself.

you will be fine in the lounges but if you wonder into either B.A.T.S. at the Shangri-La or to the Jazz Bar on the second floor of the Portman, they can make their appearances. Actually, B.A.T.S. can be knee deep in hookers.

Agree with BATS. I have only been there twice and both times there were hookers present.

Not just in the streets surrounding the Portman Ritz-Carlton (whatever it is). They are always hanging around in and around the Starbucks downstairs, and in the Long Bar (inside the complex but not in the hotel itself). The Long Bar actually taxes the hookers. They pay RMB 2000 per month to the bar to do business there. One of them works out at my gym and told me all about it. As you can see I go to this classy gym that attracts all the movers and shakers.

yeah, stay away from the Shangrila...my advice would be the 4 seasons or the Portman. Even though they do hang out at the long bar, the Portman staff is generally pretty strict about letting them into the building...i have rarely ever seen any in the jazz bar there...

I stayed in the St. Regis for 8 months and only ever saw two girls come into the lounge (and I was there almost every night). Very quiet, live jazz band, decent ambience and probably the best rooms you can get in Shanghai. One girl approached a couple customers and was promptly escorted out by security. Location is the only thing that sucks... but taxi's are cheap Smile Just don't go wandering over to the Holi-dump park area across the street... more than once I've had the shrubs yelling at me from across the street "Massage? Sexy massage? sex?"....

FYI, the Ritz was one of the first 5 star hotels to get put in... so it's a little on the old side now. If you are going to spend the money (which still isn't alot for a 5 star hotel), think about some of the other top names you can think of... like the Grand Hyatt in Jinmao tower

The Hyatt would be a good option for a customer as guests are always very impressed by the fantastic views from the Jinmao Tower. Plus the hotel itself is 1st rate and there are lots of restaurants and bars in the hotel itself as well as in the Jinmao podium building. The hotel lobby is on the 54th floor and all bars/restaurants are accessed through the 54th floor (and there are always on-the-ball lift attendants and security personnel), so none of those pesky ladies of the night hanging around either.

Does anyone think the original poster actually wants to find out where the hookers are?
