| Post subject: Shanghainese lessons available? |
I know that there are plenty of courses to learn Mandarin, but does anyone know of any places with Shanghainese courses to recommend? Also, is it possible for a small group of us, like 4-5 ppl to take a private class? How much would it cost? |

I live and work in Shanghai so I hear Shanghainese all of the time. I would really like to learn some Shanghainese as well.
On one hand, I agree with Acujerjer that it is a waste of time. If I leave Shanghai, then it is not of much use. If I want to learn another dialect I feel that learning Cantonese might be a bit more useful.
On the otherhand, if I stay in Shanghai, it will be fun and useful to learn the local dialect. Learning something new is never really a waste of time. |

I agree with Chingy. Anything new learnt, is not a waste of time in the persons eyes that is learning them. If other people think its a waste of time, then for them, it is.

rgeczi8, thank you for your support. It is not a waste of time for me.
I am fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese because I've lived in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Since I plan to stay in Shanghai for a really long time, I think it is useful to learn Shanghainese. Maybe for English-only speakers here is different, but being an Asian from overseas, don't you find that locals are not as friendly when you speak only Mandarin? Local Shanghainese are often nicer if you speak their dialect, or at least I could get better bargain deals while shopping  . |

Oh I see you are overseas Chinese. That is a little different then. If your mandarin is perfect then it shouldn't take you long to learn shanghainese. For people like me, who speak Mandarin, yet not as perfect as a Native speaker, I think it would be a waste of time. For me, time better spent would be to improve my mandarin. Because I rarely encounter a situation in Shanghai where everyone is speaking Shanghainese and leaving me out of the conversation. It happens, but not often. And noone is going to speak dialect to a foreigner. |

guys
Shanghainese is not so easy to learn and less useful even you want to use it for bargain,though some of us including me are shanghainese. However, it's really funny, right? Maybe, understanding shanghainese is more useful than speaking shanghainese. If for funny, just find a shanghai friend, then pick up some shanghainese when talking with him or her. That will be better.
It will be a waste of time unless you have mastered mandarin and will stay in shanghai for really a long time. |

Better deal bargaining is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You don't have to speak local dialect to save 5 RMB in bargaining. Also, most of the venders in Shanghai are wai di ren that don't even speak Shanghainese. |

Ok, I was only kidding about bargaining, it's of course not the main reason (but partly). I plan to stay in Shanghai for a long time, and I find that locals still prefer to speak in Shanghainese. When I get in a taxi or into a store, they always speak Shanghainese first. Then I have to ask them to speak in Mandarin, and sometimes they would be unpatient and even a bit rude. It's also true while I deal with vendors/ contractors for work, they would rather speak in Shanghainese. Of course they would not appear rude while dealing with work, but those Shanghainese would still converse to each other in the dialect.
AJJ, fine, I also admit that I'm bored. Since I've also taken up piano lessons, and even went to get my driver license (that took a fun two hours)... which the first thing that my friends heard about would say that I really have a lot of spare time...
Boredom is also the reason why I started reading this site so much and even posted a few. Shanghai Open Chat is really fun to read... |

Next time someone says "Why do you wanna learn Shanghainese?" just say "Because," and don't waste your time bloating other people's egoes by justifying yourself to them when you could be using that time to study Shanghainese and expand your mind.
PS - does anyone know a cool fun song in Shanghainese to learn for KTV? |

good idea...long way to go...little advice...master your mandarian tightly before going any further...sounds u have confidence about urs...good luck...
shanghaiese lessons seem little shxt for my opnion...suggest u learn from some shanghaiese girls...plenty of here eager to teach foreigners... |

Thank you all for my concern from 3 years ago. Yes, I am fluent in Mandarin and Catonese. Since I've been living in Sh for so long, I have managed to pick up some Shanghainese, now I can undertand most conversations but still speak very little. I'm a cute girl, so there are also plenty of Shanghainese guys willing to teach |
