| Post subject: Stock Market in China |
Hi, I am interested in learning about Chinese stocks. More specifically, I would like to know how to research companies, make investments and build a portfolio. Does anyone have experience in investing directly in mainland stocks?
Cheers,

Sounds like a good way to lose money to me. Is there any financial regulation worth talking about here? |

The biggest problem in researching companies in China is the intransparancy of the financial reporting. Even government sources like China daily mention that about 90% of the companies here cook their books. There is however a way to invest in Chinese companies through the Hong Kong traded H-shares or 'red chips'. The companies listed there have to fulfill much stricter requirements in order to qualify for listing. There is a big choice of brokers in Hong Kong. Personally I like the online trading facilities of boom.com |

Same. Boom.com is the way to do it without needing to run too much risks related to transparency (or lack of). |

Is it legal for foreigners even to buy stocks directly in the Chinese exchanges? I thought I read somewhere that its not strictly legal to do so. |

You can also buy mainland stocks on the NYSE or the NASDAQ. Of course it is limited to big companies. You can find telecom, oil, automotive, airlines, etc. Some information here:

The A-share markets in Shanghai and Shenzhen are officially still restricted. The B-share market is open for foreign direct investment since something like 4 years if I remember right. |

All the big companies are listed in Hong Kong. I have a brokerage account at Heng Seng Bank which allows me to trade online. It also provides market news and data. The problem is you need a HK address to open an account. I think Hong Kong market is more liquid and less costly than NYSE. |
