| Post subject: Bats in China |
I am not sure if posting in this section is appropriate, but I will do it anyways. I don't see any other section devoted for a question like mine.
I want to ask everyone if they ever had a run in with a bat. You know, bats. The ones that fly. I have encountered mice and other things, but before last night, never a bat.
Anyone ever had a bat sighting in China? Scared me to death. I was watching a movie on my computer, and all of a sudden I see something swarming above me. The corner of my eye I see something black, or dark coloured. Then, I check in the bedroom and sure enough its a bat. I just opened the window to entice it to leave this morning.
Again, any thoughts on this, and possible solutions of removing it if its still here? |

Last year, I was working in Jin Shan and I was given this small appartment to stay in, anyway the aircon was not the best around so I left the window open.
About 2 in the morning I was woken by this noise, so I turned on the light, and there was a BAT flying around my bedroom.
I shat myself.
Manged to chase out of the bedroom and into the kitchen, so I closed the door and went back to bed, next day got the Chinese to go in and get it.
True story. |

There are a *ton* of bats every night on my walk under the light rail line south of Chifeng Rd. Never had a personal encouter, but they're there... |

we have a colony in our kitchen wall -they sound like mice on speed. still trying to figure out a nice way to evict them without resulting in trapping any in the wall and consequent death by starvation for the poor buggers |

was surprised to see bats flying around Ganghui (Grand Gateway) but never had any personal encounter with them. Found out from my local colleagues that it's a common sighting in Shanghai. |

There are bats everwhere here. At dusk if you look up you'll see what you think are birds flying around... well they're not. |

There are also heaps of bats flying around the Jing An temple around dusk as well. they eat the moths and insects that are attracted by the spot lights |

Well, I think bats are kind of sensitive to sound. Its too bad you can't just crank the tunes to scare them away.  Or maybe you can, don't know. I am looking outside my window at one right now. I am using an umbrella to shoo it away. I don't know if its sleeping because I am poking at it, but just moving slightly. Its kinda like waking up a drunk friend the morning after.
Anyways, I will keep you up to date on my bat problem. |

Just think of it as an answer to the mosquito problem. Unless of course you wake up one morning and half your leg has been eaten by a hungry bat. If that happens then do something about it otherwise enjoy getting closer to nature. |

Well, that would be a good way to look at it, but my apartment right now is mosquito free, so, there is no more work for the little guy/girl to do. And I just found out there are two little bats, one currently in my apartment, the other hanging around outside of my living room window. And I don't even know how it got in. I have my ideas, but no visual.
I have to go now, chase away the "bedroom invader". Again, I will keep everyone up to date on my dilemma. |

***Bat Update***
I finally got the "bedroom invader" to leave the apartment. I looked around in my bedroom, and found him clinging on the the curtains. So, after I knew where it was, I just opened the window, slowly slid the part of the curtain it was attached to, then used a broom to gently show him/her the way to the free world.
No stunning/killing or any other violent action. I job well done I think. haha
There is still his/her friend that is hanging around outside my window. I guess I can let them stay there, as long as it doesn't come in here. I think it got in through the cooking vent. You know above the place where you cook, has a vent to let the air/smoke go outside. Well, ours is loose, from a few windy days that we had. So, I am going to have someone come here to tightly secure it. |

Okay!!!!! Enough!!!! You guys have me laughing my a$$ off right now!!!!! This is truely the most hilarious thread I have read on Shanghai Expat!!!!! I am sure that is mainly because I am still in "safe" Canada and there are no BATS here.
Okay, I just have one question reguarding these bats... Do They Bite??? Your answer may have a very big influence on my desision to go to Shanghai so please no teasing...
We have bats here at our local petting zoo and I think they are actually pretty cute, I just don't see getting along with them if they are trying to share my house!!

I have never seen a bat here (although I am not terribly observant of flying creatures) but Yu888 told me that they were all around (in a serious bat thread or maybe back in boring). So while they may be here, I have lived in a state of bat-free oblivion for years. I wouldn't worry too much! |

Bats bite according to World Link doctors they are likely to have rabbies, hence their recommendation for rabbies vaccine (expensive). Hey is this the World Link or the Bat thread? Why dont we merge the two? |

There certainly are bats in Canada! I came back from a drive one night to find a bat plastered to the front grille of my car!
If you want to see bats in Shanghai, look up around dusk. There are tonnes of them everywhere  |

Mag, how have you not seen bats? There are so many. Mostly they are the little ones, but I have seen the silhouettes of some real monsters around. So nice to hear that everyone on this thread is being careful when evicting them |

Bats bite, but you really have to piss one off to get them to do it. We've had them in our house back home for years. I used to throw rocks at them at night to get them to fly lower so we could get a look at them. My best friend had one get caught in her hair one night. Never bit her.
You guys are killing me. Much ado about nothing. Use some common sense and you won't have a problem. Or, stay away from Seasons Villas, they're everywhere here. I love it. |

Mags, you haven't seen them, I am moving where you live!!!! HeHe... I'll be okay. I don't mind seeing some BATS (since they fly high I will probably be safe under the bed until the Ayi gets the bat out right?)
Thanks guys for freaking me out!!! Is there any other animals, anphibians, insects larger than my thumb I should know about???

YES there are BATS ALL OVER Shanghai - makes sense as bats as a species make up almost a quarter of the mammalian species with nearly 1,000 species of bats world wide
do they bite? well hell if you were harrassed and terrified by someone hugely bigger than yourself you might resort to biting no? but the key word there was MIGHT - so leave them alone and they will you
as to the rabies question -
"Be it resolved on this 30th day of October 1999, that researchers gathered at the 29th North American Symposium on Bat Research find no credible support for the hypothesis that undetected bites by bats are a significant factor in transmitting rabies to humans, as implied by the January 16, 1998 issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
In our collective experience, bats seldom are aggressive, even when sick, and humans typically feel and recognize any bites they receive. The undetected bite hypothesis is derived from the inability of medical professionals to interview patients due to late moribund or postmortem diagnoses. In the rare cases in which humans contract rabies from bats, the available evidence strongly suggests that bite histories could have been remembered and reported by coherent patients. We are deeply concerned about the negative consequences of the undetected bite hypothesis, as it appears to have moved from hypothesis to fact without adequate testing. The consequences are both economic and social. The economic costs are clear, and the social impact is seen, both in the way that people react to bats and in the way that conservation efforts are impeded. The undetected bite hypothesis is not supported by evidence, and it should not drive public policy or public health responses.
We recognize the need for reasonable precautions against rabies, including vaccination of all who handle bats professionally and public education that: 1) cautions never to handle bats; 2) warns to seek immediate medical evaluation of any actual or suspected animal bite; and 3) places risks in perspective with values.
