Lots of threads about this, so do a search on hair salons on this website. I go to Toni and Guy in Times Square and I leave a satisfied customer. I see western customers in there all the time, so they are probably quite use to working with western hair.

I go to Beijing Hair Culture in Xintandi, noticed quite a few Expats using them also. Can be pricey but always a good service and the staff are always friendly.

^wouldnt bloody notice it Laughing
Beijing hair at the hilton is also good, only if you want to spend a bit of money though.
Toni and Guy are shocking, should be done under the trade description act ( call themselves hairdressers)
You could always try Benson, see the advert on site.

Pency Idea in Hong Kong Plaza - Huai Hai Road.

A shitty hairdress shop you can find everywhere is fine...
The bigger ones are not the best ones, for sure...
Now, if u want to show off and talk soft i do not recommend 'em...

Post subject: New Hair Salon

Hey there's a new hair salon in the Huaihai Road Cybermall basement, next to Hong Kong Plaza, called L'Attitude; have both Hong Kong and local stylists, special discount now on all services, very good price and good service too. Worth trying out. Very Happy

One of my friends who's moving to Shanghai with me is a hairdresser. I'm lucky to have my own stylist with me, haha. Wink

But anyways, she's amazing when it comes to both cut and color. I was freaking out before she decided to come to Shanghai with me, since I started worrying about maintaining my highlights and wasn't too impressed with the salons I saw when visiting my dad, but I'm a happy camper now.

If anyone out there needs some swedish styling and/or someone who's a pro at blonde colors (in my opinion, blonde is the hardest to achieve, especially for colorists who are not used to do it day in and day out) you should get in touch with her when we get there..

has anyone had blonde highlights done at any of these places? i fink thats the trickiest thing to get done out here as they r not used to it. i had a major hair disaster with a hairdresser in beijing and im still very wary of hairdressers out here. MinisSthlm, is your friend still coming out here in January?!

As I've said in another thread I had a terrible experience getting my roots done on my blonde hair at Eric Paris' Hengshan Lu. I was left with chunks missing as they overlapped the bleach resulting in my hair snapping off about 2cm from my scalp in sections. A real horror story!

When I return to Oz for Christmas I'm actually dying my hair dark brown so I don't have to deal with maintaining blonde in China- it's just too difficult!

I completely agree with Dasher I was blonde when I came over and had been for the past 12 years but maintenance in China just seems harder than it needs to be so I have already done the return trip to Aus to see the hairdresser - got to love a girls priorities when the appointment was booked in four months in advance and it was the first day back...

Yes, she's coming and will stay for 6 months atleast. She'll be bringing a lot of her chemicals with her from Sweden I think, in order to not have any problems. She's awesome at blonde hairs, I can see if I find a few pictures to show if you'd like. My hair on my avatar (eventhough it is distorted) is done by her.

Before she decided to join me in coming to China I had decided on dying my hair brown in order to avoid disasters at the salons. Especially since my strands of hair are so thin, a mishap with dying (especially with blonde which could easily cause my hair to break) would've been disastrous and too much for me to handle, haha..

I'll get back to you once we're there. She also does an excellent job cutting, and I'm one of those girls who'se extremely picky with stylists and colorists, so I wouldn't let her touch my hair if I didn't have 100% confidence on her skills. Very Happy

Post subject: Highly recommended

Beijing Hair Culture not bad but I found far better one in terms of services, environment, work, and even communications.

I highly recommend Next Salon located at Hyatt On the Bund. They can speak English. They can exactly give you what you want or even something different. Noticed alot of expats.

Hi, has anyone with quite short hair, had a hair cut??? I found so far not very good experiences in cutting for the short hair. So I have a problem with the hair stylist and I am quite picky especially with my short and thin hair. Any suggestion please?

Seems there are quite a few places, but differing opinions on the service received. Has anyone been going to a hair stylist for a long period of time (more than just one trip) and been happy each time with the cut/colour/service they have received? I am surprised that their are no western hair stylists in SH with a booming business, since it is not easy to find a good hair stylist who does what YOU want. Also, what is considered reasonable for a cut/colour, etc, compared to the prices at any local hair salon (which is usually much cheaper)? Thanks

Whatever you do, don't tell them to surprise you or you'd really be surprised. After my friend & I arrived, we went to a hair salon...I got an acceptable hair cut, but my friend who wanted to be surprised...was surprised. Shocked

regis salon in cloud nine: not totally, local, but not expat-ish like toni & guy.

as a guy, very pleased with how well they can do a fade... they service a lot of taiwanese clients and i dunno, that raises their quality somehow? makes no sense but true.

I get my hair cut at CONTESTAROCKHAIR.

They are on the second floor of Joy Tower, 9 Zhengning Road, near Huashan Road. Fabio is a great guy and is really good.

The guys have salons in Rome, Florence, Miami and now Shanghai.

I have been living in Shanghai for over a year now and when I first made the decision to move here the first thought was who was going to do my hair.
Back in Canada my hair was colored every 6 weeks and cut probably every 2 months. I have great hair but difficult blond, long and thick.
Within a week of moving here my friend recommended Benson Salon to me and I have never looked bad. I constantly receive many comments on how great my hair looks and that is because of Benson.
I have recommended Benson Salon to several people and we all have had a great experience!
Many thanks to Benson and his staff in making me look fabulous!

RERSTIN and JIMGONG are BENSON SALON.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T GO TO BENSON'S. THEY ARE SPAMMERS.
