| Post subject: PR and Business on Shanghaiexpat |
Public relations and rubbing shoulders with the "small guys" is an important part of any business model because it always ensures the business will have access to future opportunities when those "small guys" "mature". I would say it is true that many shanghaiexpat users are small businessman. Therefore, by cooperating and communicating with shanghaiexpat users, businesses can help secure future opportunities. Interacting with small players is a relatively risky business, basically because they have little to lose and they don't always communicate in the "cultured" way that those in the upper-levels do. It's important not to become arrogant toward them though because monkeys can learn. It becomes clear then, that it would be unwise to make such statements as the following:
I can assure you we gain very little from commenting on this site. ShanghaiExpat readers are not target ooooooo & Associates clients - we deal with investments in the USD20 million plus range by and large with listed corporations, not small businessmen.

It would be better for this company to not post on this site at all, than to post this kind of comment because it would start to erode the branding that they were beginning to establish among the minds of some of Shanghai's expat population. Could it have been an erroneous PR slip and not at all a part of the actual company outlook?
I was a small businessman and entrepreneur in Shanghai sometimes with barely a few rmb in my pocket. I was working on all fronts to succeed. Now I work offshore for an international investment firm in a China-oriented position. I make in a week what I used to make in six-months in Shanghai. I interact with the very customers ooooooo is seeking. It's real hard for most people to imagine the business environment here in Shanghai/China, therefore my opinions hold weight.
The mark of a great company is being able to pick up the pieces without stifling the debate. I look forward to ooooooo's comment below.
No hard feelings.
Best,

Who cares? I am arrogant too, so I can understand the same failing in others. I would be happy to hire comrade Fidel, his mafiosi thugs, internet babes and his dozens of local female accountants of all shapes and sizes. Not because of his crappy internet-forum PR. Not because of his excellent newsletter-based PR. But because I want to rub shoulders with the rich & famous, the likes of Paris Hilton, George Cloney, Gadhafi and Fidel, learn from them and maybe one day own my very own luxury yatch, complete with helicopter and multi-racial harem (always in international waters where age of consent does not apply, or so I was told). |

I think that they are very helpful. They give professional advice for free! And yet, what, somehow this is not good enough? What more do you want? |
