Referring to someones post earlier, what is the NY style pizza ? Or rather, what are the differences between the pizzas in California, Chigago and New York ?
My experience with pizzas from the countries I've been travelling to has been that it usually comes in rather flat construction, where the bread is on the bottom and cheese on the top (i remember reading somewhere that the original pizza didn't have cheese, but was later on, during the era of pizza development, added to glue the ingredients making it easier to eat) , usually round, rarely square, thin, thick or something in between, baked in many different kinds of ovens.
Althought been to the previously mentioned locations, I didn't go deep into the culinary experiences with pizzas there (though reading this topic, I think I missed something). So could someone define the characteristics of e.g. typical NY-style -pizza in comparison to e.g. Pizza Hut pan pizza (12 inch) :p
This post was inspired by the Pizza Italia #9c, which I just received and enjoyed. Easy come easy go. |

Seve is from near Venice in Italy. I can't quite remember where. But he's Very proud of his pizza, at this modern styled restaurant on Beijing Xilu.
I hear you Verspertilia - Italian pizza rocks too! But there's a time and a place for american pizza.... like on my couch in front of the TV.....

Only reliant on Papa Johns... can someone tell me their good pizzas... their delivery menus do not have english pizza names?
I had the supreme, all-meats, fisherman and bbq chicken. The last 2 were relatively bad. |

My favourite pizza chain is Papa Johns so I’m happy they have them here now.
How many Papa Johns are there in town nowadays and where are they?
I only know of the one on Hongmei Lu! |

if we get pizza we normally order from Papa Johns - they have an english menu - well mine is in english anyway. All the meats is good as is Super Papas, they others that we've tried haven't been very good. |

You mean you customised your own pizza with toppings? So far, I havent been that adventurous. I only ordered what they say on the phone. My delivery menu is english except for the pizza names (which appear in chinese?!). Can you be so kind to give me the respective english names of the pizzas from top to bottom (starting with Classic Pizza category)?
So far, have tried most of the starters... salad, chicken wings and onion rings are good. Dun like the garlic and other white sauce. Not a fan of the peppers too... would prefer parmesan or dried chilli options.

Have since tried Pizza Italia delivery once. Their popular ones seems to be Pizza Firenze, Pizza Hawaii, Scented Mountains Pizza. I ordered Scented Mountains and Pizza Pisa... thin crust. Delivery was timely. As expected, thin crust was soggy. Both came with sliced hard boiled eggs which was different to me but tasted nice. The vegetarian Pisa was very garlicky and oniony. Overall nice. Came with no condiments/sauce whatsoever... but i guess that's italian style.
Been to Jingan temple station few times... can't for the life of me, seem to find that NY Pizza place. Anyone with exact directions from the front of the shopping center (Nanjing West Rd side)? |

The only pizza i've had in Shanghai worth a mention is Jimix Seve. There's is good by any standards. Other than that, we make good pizza at home. For the life of me, I can't figure out how people can eat Papa John's by choice, it's just crap. |

The problen with the Pizza in China is that the cheese is TOO mild, not cheesy enough, no bite.
There is a cheap Chinese chain Hello pizza, only one of their Pizzas is good but that is really good the 4 Cheese Pizza, very cheesy. |

C'mon ... you are just being critical.... crap is supermarket frozen pizzas.... not Papa johns or Pizza hut, etc.. Crap is 'smelly tofu' or durian to some, for example.
I myself am not a pizza expert but as long it tastes nice, it's.... well, nice!
Wat is your definition of good pizza? Crust, toppings, sauce...? Where is Jimix exactly?

Anyone said Da Marco's pizza is good, would be shot half dead by CK??? I am surprised he hasnt put any comment here... must be on holiday...
We had this thread a while ago and the best vote going for Jimix and Da Marco, in this case I an CK are enemies in opinion. I still dont like Jimix but promised to go for second round... this time I trapped in the village too long, had got no chance to eat PIZZA yet. Last time with Pizza Hut (the only pizza place in town), it gave me nausea for days. Thou sometimes I still go back there...hehehe... BEGGAR CAN NOT BE CHOOSY... thatz it, no other pizza, pizza hut would be heaven sent already |

CHeck ou NYC Pizza on Nanjing Lu. below and across from Windows and next to the subway exit #2 in Jing An Temple.....They have slices you can buy for 10kuai but they are not as good as a fresh pizza for only 80kuai......also have crushed chilli pepper and parmesan at the restaurant. |

I am laughing at this thread...real pizza in Shanghai...I am yet to see it. I have just returned from Xmas in Italy and savoured REAL pizza there again...cause you won't find it here....
The "closest' I have seen (and more importantly tasted) to acceptable pizze are:

*Da Marco
*Casanova
Papa Johns...NYS Pizza? Come on...you ARE joking. Pizza Hut.....? PLEASE!!!.....Pizza Italia isnt much better....i.e SHITE! Had a pizza at 'Prego' at the Westin round 2 months ago....RUBBISH! Whats a waste of money that was...
Overall - the pizza in Shanghai is OVERPRICED and D-Grade in quality. |

Will try those mentioned above and see what you mean in 'good'.
I've been to italy and so forth .... but does not feel that I've tasted something that makes the pizzas here as SHITE or RUBBISH. After all, it's only toppings on crackers or bread. |

pizza. an age-old debate about the various qualities. people will go round and round discussing the various merits and detriments of different places. it all depends on what you like, what you are used to and what you are craving. in the modern world, it doen't matter where the owners are from, where the ingredietns are imported (to some degree) from, etc. it just matters if it tastes good. it's a pizza for christ's sake.
for an acceptable pizza for a just simply overpriced cost, try basic tomato and cheese from pasta fresca. yeah, yeah, yeah... the place has been around for years, the prices tend to be inflated (it irks me that they still see the need to charge rmb30-40 for a simple soft drink... they dont hold the market on italian food anymore); however, the pizza is light, the sauce is just right and the cheese isn't slopping over theedge. a more delicate taste and certainly not a pizza for a family, but still worth a shot.
and if you still aren't happy with the various pizzas available in shanghai (from anywhere)... best advice is to get over it. you can whine about your favorite once you are home. |
