Post subject: Credit Card Application

Good day all,

Went to the Bank of China today to open my bank account. No issues there. Wanted to apply for a China credit card and was told that I can't because I'm not Chinese. Apparently this goes for all the other banks in China.

Any one know if this is true? or is there a non local bank in Shanghai that would provide this service? I prefer this so that I can have an account and pay my credit card direct through internet banking as I travel alot... plus I don't lose out on exchange rates. Thanks in advance.

China Merchant Bank offers a dual currency (RMB/USD) credit card. Internet banking is only in Chinese but can be deceiphered. Phone banking is bi-lingual and very good.

We have a Bank of China credit card, but maybe it is okay because the account is dual currency. ???

Having tried a couple..China Merchant is far and away the best local bank for a personal account. BOC is not a good idea.. except to spoil your day or have an occasion laugh (if it doesn't cost you anything).

You can apply for a credit card, and I assume even at BOC, when you are a resident here meaning you have a stable job, a company that can back you up (working information must be filled) which should translate to a Z visa. Otherwise even at CMB I don't think that you can get that credit card.

I remember that before 2001 it was possible to just go and apply for a card at BOC. You just needed to deposit 500$ in your checking account and that corresponded to your initial credit line. I don't know if some banks are still offering that.

If a non national has obtained a credit card recently being a non-resident (student, tourist, non-contract teacher or business traveller) please post it here.

Debit cards are the norm here with I think over 800 millions cards in circulation and it was only recently that banks are trying to promote credit card to the mid and high class. This is a market that foreign banks will be happy to exploit once restrictions are bannished.
