Post subject: Car and Driver

Can ANYONE give me some information or direct me to a link about renting a car and driver? I'm sure I've seen info here before on that, and I've looked and looked and asked around a LOT but no one seems to be able to tell me what company to contact or what website to look for and my company is clueless. I also have not found any info about this. We have $500 transportation allowance per month... Does anyone know if we can rent/lease/buy a car (obviously buying would cost more) for this price range? What are our options? Does anyone know who to contact?
Thank you for any advice you might have!

I just read through oddpig's long post and could not find the site -- but I remember seeing a site link that was a Chinese site to find a car and driver (but not a taxi company site). If anyone has the link -- please post it agains, as I need it too.

$500 (assuming USD) would be enough to cover a driver witha car in many cases, but the search for a good one is always tough.

There are companies that supply such services, but you end up paying more for very little added benefit other than the initial find.

For a daily rental, here is a link that we found:

It will be difficult to fina a car and a driver for 500USD. I had a similar arrangement, and until recently was renting a Car and a Driver for 6500RMB per month. The car was an Audi Joint Venture manufactured here in China, but in very good condition. Driver paid for the fuel, insurance, and just about everything else. Worked from 8:30am till 8:30pm 6 days a week.

For about 500USD, you can lease a small car --- say an OPEL or a BUICK SAIL or some such. You could actually negotiate the lease for about 3500RMB per month. Then you add the fuel, the parking, the driver, etc and it adds up. A good driver, say 5 days a week, will cost you about 2000RMB per month. Do not expect your driver to speak any English....although you will be able to manage in a matter of weeks.

There was a post here a while back advertising for a JEEP lease at 5000RMB per month. IMO, that's a rip off. The MSRP on that JEEP is about 110K, so 5000 is a little steep.

If 500USD per month is your budget, I'd rather buy a small car --- put an out of state license on it (dirt cheap), and drive around. Just watch for the ring roads at specific times in the morning, and you should be ok. Driving in Shanghai is not too difficult, although it depends on where you're from originally. Regardless, if Puxi is not in your immediate scheme of everyday trips, then Pudong roads are fairly easy to negotiate.

PSX.

Can you please post or send me the info of your car renting/driver company? My budget is about $1,000 a month so 6,500 RMB sounds pretty good. I meet with our CEO next week to settle on the car rental so I'd like to have as many options available as possible. I'm hoping to get something like a Passat with a driver for 8,000 RMB, more or less.
