My husband, I and our 9 year old daughter are moving to Shanghai this summer. We are going for our look see in March. I have been researching schools on the internet and am trying to narrow down my search. My daughter presently attends a nondenominational nontraditional school in Tampa. The school is unique in which the teachers teach to the child. Each person learns either kinetically, visually or orally so it covers all those area in their teaching style. It is also an extremely positive enviromement. The students are involved in sports, arts, drama, music during school as well as after school (if they wish). This school will be sorely missed when we leave. My daughter is very involved in chorus, drama at school and out of school and has been on a swim team with the YMCA for 3 years. Any recommondations on schools we should visit will be be greatly appreciated.

Shanghai American School in Puxi has a new swimming pool and an active swim team from grade 3/4 up to high school. I believe they are the only school with their own pool right now. They have choir in middle and high school. The middle school produces one play a year and the high school does several. They have a new performing arts center (same building as the new pool - lol). In grade 5 the music class is band with no formal drama opportunites that I recall other than things done in individual classes - my daughter's class did lots of skits as class projects. The fourth grade did a play - "james and the giant peach". The middle school after school sports program is great - very inclusive and actively participated in - no cuts, friendly competions with area schools.
As far as teaching style at SAS, it really depends on the teacher. The classes are capped at 18 so the teacher gets to know the students well and has the opportunity to teach to their style - my daughter seemed to learn in a variety of ways last year in grade 5. In general I think any school with a US based curriculum will be closer to the style of teaching you are looking for. The UK style is more formal.
