Post subject: Best Malaysia/Singapore dishes in Shanghai

I have recently been to this restaurant which is newly open, by now about 2 weeks old(not officially open yet).

They serves excellent local dishes of Malayan and Singapore dishes. They are to me as close to the real stuff due to the restriction of the raw ingredients. They have Bak Kut Teh, Asam Laksa (spicy), Curry Fishhead, Roti Prata (Indian Nan/bread), Chilli Fried Sotong (Squid), Hor Fun(flat noodle), Yuan Yang (mixture of vermicille and yellow noodle) etc etc. They accept telephone bookings of special dishes if you know one and they will try to do so as close as the ingredients can get. For expats visiting the Far East soon, you should come here and try the food so that you will be able to make a comparison when you are there, so that you will know what dishes to call when you are there. For the locals, yes, my driver is a local and he ate as much as me! For food adventurist, this is a good place to know South East Asian food. Most important it is reasonably priced.

Oops the address... Well, the restaurant name is MALAYA and is located at 205 Luban Road. Just in case you are lost, call 53015989.

Any people interested in going, let me know as the bigger the crowd is, the more variety of food we are able to taste! Drop me a line Lah (what a malaysian /singaporean will always end the sentence with).

ehh steady lah! we go tonight! damn sian of xiaolong bao already! (translation: yes, let's do it! we shall go to the above-mentioned venue tonight as I am extremely bored with with Shanghainese food!)

So wesley, meepok makes you think of your neighbourhood huh? Your name reminds me of a Methodist church that's affliated to my junior college some 9 years back!

Eh cannot wait already lah...it's lunchtime now some more. Wah lau eh, buay tahan!
(translation: I don't think I can wait another minute more. Besides, it's lunchtime now and I can't take this excruciating pain of looking forward to some hometown food!)

I hope this list fills up soon, REALLY soon. Honestly, I'm sick of Crossroads on Huaihai Lu, inside Parkson's - then again, it's only because it's quite near where I live and the managers there are quite nice. PLUS - I'm also feeling a little homesick. Not the "I-want-my-mummy and my teh-tarik!" type of homesick but that fuzzy feeling of speaking Singlish with a fellow Singaporean here in Shanghai, just for a change. Put it this way, it's either been straight-up proper putonghua or PROPER English with Caucasians (I can't resist this: ANGMOHS!) for me over the last 4 months. So you can imagine whenever the opportunity presents itself for me to speak Singlish, I go absolutely MAD over it! (side note: I miss my only Singaporean friend who's gone back to Singapore for an interview!)

*breathe breathe*

So yeah, someone, fill this list quick! I promise, meepok isn't a crazy person at all in real life!

i'm in Singapore here... and i'm laughing away. Great Singlish translation. Meepokman: are you from ACJC?
It;s the only methodist JC I can think of. I'm jealous... you guys all stay in puxi!

Hey, I know this is straying away from the main topic, but how difficult has it been adapting to mandarin usage? The last time I actively used mandarin was in secondary school when I did my 'higher chinese' (but a less classy version since I went to one of those angmoh sec school). I'm thinking of taking up mandarin classes in SH to brush up my skills, but I'm in this weird language situation (of being good enough but not quite good enough) which you probably will understand.

It is the ONLY Methodist JC I think! 'In days of yore...*one two sing*...in days of yore from western shores...'

And yes, the mandarin usage question should've been on your OTHER post dahling...but we'll get to that in no time. In the meantime, watch all the SCV Channel 55/TCS 8/Channel U drama series or Channel 56/Star 62 Chinese movies to prepare yourself for some big time shingshongshang.

Actually it's the Shanghainese dialect that makes me go mad, not mandarin.

Jiang hua yu...yi er san...hua ren jiang hua yu...Rasa sayang eh...oh this hunger is making me go crazy.

Remember the Mad Chinaman by Dick Lee? Great album actually. I still have it on tape I think!

MeePoktah,
I can totally understand what you mean by the "fuzzy" feeling of speaking Singlish. Though I am not Singaporean, I am a Malaysian who grew up in Singapore - spent more than half my life there! I have been here for almost 2 months now. Each time a friend comes into Shanghai from Singapore, I will talk non-stop to them. So rest assured that you are not the only one afflicted by that "fuzzy" feeling.

On a side note, I tried some Malaysian food at a restaurant on the top floor of Parkson at Hong Qiao. I can not remember the exact name but they claim to serve south east asian food. Think the penang char kway teow there is pretty authentic. Yummy.. Razz

What's this...Malaysia boleh? Eh, Singapura juga boleh! Or is it boleh juga. My Bahasa fails me. Kayu lah, saya.

So the list is filling up! Good good! *evil laugh fills the air*

How about decent Tauhu Telur? I was SHOCKED that they called that THING Tauhu Telur at Fusion. It was just pieces of panfried tofu and a couple of chunks of scrambled eggs, and there wasn't even the taugeh! WTF! They didn't even bother to mix in the peanut gravy - what, scared too ugly issit. All that "authenticity" for RMB 38.

I want Tauhu Telur...sorry for being a brat.

Start the PMs rolling! Of course, phone numbers/e-mail addresses and the real names (but not out in the open otherwise you'd kenna prank calls at 3am or worse still, your ex's pictures flooding your e-mail boxes). Ok, that's too scary, the exchanging of phone numbers, but we could start a mailing list I suppose?

Suddenly, Singlish is rocking this part of the forum and my goodness, it feels damn SHIOK!

And Oyster (now I'm thinking Orh Lua at Lavender Market), where's Soya anyway? I only got here in Nov 2003. Only know of Crossroads and HEARD of that elusive Frankie's...

What's the definition of an expat anyway? If it's just someone working overseas, then I guess I fit the bill. If it's someone working overseas and getting paid in astronomical figures, then I am looking for someone to fit my bill.

When Wesley?! I'm hungry!

Hi Everyone,

I'm a newbie here.... in this forum and in Shanghai. Juz arrived 2 weeks ago. Not quite feeling homesick yet, but the cravings for home food is just about to begin....altho I still haven't had enough of Xiaolongbao. Glad to know there are so many Singaporeans and Malaysians here. I know where to find "makan kakis" now. Juz wanna say a big "HI" to all of u.

Is there anywhere I can get ingredients for S'pore/ M'sian/ Thai food? Such as, fresh coconut, daun limau purut, pandan, curry leaves, limes etc.? (Asking but not really optimistic of getting an affirmative reply....sigh!).

So when's this outing to the Malaya Restaurant going to take place?

although my physical presence will be missing at this grand makan outing, my heart goes out to you all... my future SIS-ters (Singaporeans in Shanghai). Damn, now I feel like vacuum packing/ dry-freezing some stuff from the Tiong Bahru, Amoy, Maxwell St, Ghim Moh, Newton, and Geylang food places and fedex them to you all. heheh.

mee pok tah - Soya is at Huai Hai road and Xing Guo road... its not call East Meet West (EMW) Soya. If you are looking for phone numbers, look up for it in one of the free mags around. Before they close down, they had one level, now they have level one serving cantonese hot pot and 2th and 3rd south east asian and western cuisine i heard...

wesley - thanks for the invitation, would like to join the gang to Malaya, will not be around for a week starting mid next week though so keep me posted on those PMs.

aussiebc - parkson (huai hai and hong qiao) is currently the best place to shop for south east asian ingredients. they used to have a thai food mart in SBM (Super Brand Mall) but heard its close down. As for other imported "wester" ingredients, try City Supermarkets (Opp parkson on Huai Hai road, lower level floor and next to Portman on Nanjing rd)

izanami - you should eat as much as you can before you arrive in shanghai and stuff yourself with xiaolongbao's!

Hoookay...this is scary now. How a little spark has burst into a flame!

I would say erhem, *stares blankly at the audience*, that our founding father of this thread, His Excellency Wesley-not-the-Methodist-Church, this makan sutra adventure, has gone off the forum for now. Hence, we can be sure that the Malaya trip would not happen tonight.

BUT...

I dare say it'll be soon! And we'll rise up and make everyone eat our dust!

Macam revolutionary.

Anyway, that was in response to a couple of PMs I've received from my fellow-foodies...but feel free to keep the contact details coming and I guess I feel compelled (seriously!!) to make this as organised as possible for Wesley - I think he's quite ON about this and izanami as well as other 'newbies' are quite gushed about future-foodie meetings here in Shanghai...so *deep breath* I'm going to put my neck out here...

Send your e-mail addies to meepoktah@hotmail.com - I'm serious about this meepok business, aren't I and ATM PIN number also can, provided you give me ATM card also - and we'll try to make this work out soon ok?

Wah...so SHIOK!

Izanami - don't forget my kopi-O packet from NTUC!
SiaoKia - don't expect pompom girls to welcome you at pudong airport ok?

See you all soon!

aussiebc,

bread talk is at this shopping mall in xu jia hui call Metro City (Mei Luo Cheng), on the ground floor.

crystal jade is at xintiandi, same complex as where nooch is at, on the other side though, facing the back of the complex but not facing the square.

i was eating lots of xiao long bao here the other day in Singapore at this place called Din Tai Fung in Paragon. It's supposedly some place from Taiwan, where each xiao long bao has 18 folds. The line was crazy. Waited for 1 hour for a table. The food was good, but I wouldn't line up for an hour if I had to do it again.
actually, what I will miss more is quality & affordable Japanese food in Shanghai. I eat it almost everyday in Singapore! will also miss all the other affordable & quality international cuisines. I've been told that eating out at Italian/French/Japanese restaurants in Shanghai is expensive.

Oyster: do they sell those bah kut teh spices and sambal chilli sauces in Shanghai?

also aussiebc,

element fresh at Portman and Waga's at Citic Square, both on Nanjing West Road has nice salad, soups and sandwiches...

it will remind you of all those nice cafes on Lygon St., Fitzroy and St. Kilda...

hope the above helps... oys

BreadTalk at Raffles City (Yes, I'm not kidding!) on the corner of Fuzhou Lu and Xizang Lu. Another one at Xujiahui I think, in Metro City. I might be wrong on the latter. But Raffles City CONFIRM have! And slightly cheaper too.

And as for Crystal Jade, aiyoh, don't bother lah. Not that fantastic really, and surprisingly you missed out seeing it at Xintiandi whilst you were alone at NOOCH! *poor thing you, but it sure builds character*...'cos Crystal Jade's in the same building! Third or Second floor, I forgot lah.

Now the challenge is...to find Thasevi or Old Chang Kee here in Shanghai!

Merdeka, my fellow Makan-eers!
RE: SIS-ters - Eh, cannot say SIS-ters lah izanami! Not all Singaporeans here. We have northern cousins browsing this forum too you know!
