Post subject: What to do with 70yr old visiting relatives from the UK ?

.....any ideas ?

I got family coming to visit mid June for just over 2 weeks. I'm looking for some ideas on how to entertain them. Aunt is a big lass with high blood pressure, uncle is fine. Rolling Eyes

So far have;

Day trip (maybe overninghter) to Hang Zhou
Day trip to Suzhou
Jin Mao
Bund
Usual sight seeing / shopping around the French Concession
Senses, Bulldog, O'Malleys, Blarney ........
Some World Cup Footy games Wink

Contemplating taking them to Beijing too for the usual, wall, forbidden city tour.

I'll be hiring a minivan rather than taking taxi's / buses or organised trips, then at least we can take it at our own pace.

Think i'll avoid the snowboarding, parasscending, mountainbiking kinda activities (unless they really misbehave Twisted Evil ), but if any of you lot have previously entertained such visitors and could give me a few ideas I'd be very thankful.

Like i said above they're around 70yrs old so i don't want them to be exhausted.

Cheers

Hmmm. Perhaps session of massage and accupunture or something like that.

Yu Yuan gardens could be a good call too.

And if they are more into the museum kind, a trip to the municipal museum is always good, specially with the permanent exhibition of bronzes and ceramics, also the Shanghai Aquarium in Pudong is pretty neat too.

World Cup footy. Hmm. I can see 1000 kuai coming my way. Smile

I've had a few visitors in that age group here... in addition to the things you mentioned, the Shanghai Museum is often popular, even with people who don't like museums. Xin Tian Di is also a good place for them to relax for the evening. The garden part of Yu Garden (beyond the mayhem that happens outside) is easy to stroll through and has resting points. Lunch can be had at the dumpling place located in the commercial part of Yu Garden. Shanghai Old Street (Fang Bang Road), adjacent to Yu Garden is also a good bet as it's not too long and is simple to move through. They may enjoy the historical side of the Peace Hotel (even though I think the place smells like mildew) and listening to a jazz band there. Place like Senses, Sasha's, Simply Thai, etc that have outdoor dining may be a nice way to spend the evening or late afternoon. An acrobats show or Beijing opera (unless you go to Beijing because it would be silly to see it here instead) could be an option. Huang Pu River cruise is another idea. Jin An Temple, unless you will see the Buddha Temple in Hangzhou. Perhaps the Jade Buddha Temple also. If they have an interest in Chinese furniture, spending the day in Hong Qiao around Wuzhong Road exploring the shops could be fun. And the arts district around Suzhou Creek. The botanical gardens over in Gubei/Hong Qiao may also be of interest, but not as good as those in Suzhou.

Count on everything taking twice as long as you anticipate.

Would avoid places like Huai Hai and Nanjing pedestrian street as they are simply too crowded and pushy for too little reward.

BTW, if anyone else has relatives coming over from the UK then Air China is offering good deals. OK, its not the best airline in the world but they actually offer you a free return flight within China as long as you pay the airport tax.

KLM also has good deals provided you dont stay for longer than a month.

Another note...

MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHERE THERE ARE BATHROOMS IN EVERY LOCATION YOU TAKE THEM.

I dont know about that. The wife got a return from heathrow to beijing and they gave her a return flight from beijing to shanghai for the price of the airport tax. The best deals around seem to be with the chinese owned travel agents in the UK.

KLM is 346 quid return from heathrow there are some cheaper options around but the transit stopovers are usually long. Its 361 from glasgow.
