Shanghai is now nr 15 in the ranking of the most expensive cities:
http://www.citymayors.com/features/cost_survey.html
This is the famous Mercer report about the quality of living:
http://www.mercerhr.com/qualityofliving
Here in this quality of living ranking, Shanghai is on 103rd place with a score of 80.1
Mercer has released a new report called Managing Quality of Living for Expatriates, which provides information to enable HR professionals and others to understand the importance of assessing worldwide standards of living, including personal safety and security, health issues, cleanliness and pollution, and transportation. More than 100 cities have been selected from Western and Eastern Europe, North and South America, Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Pacific Rim. Well if you are living as an Expat sure its expensive, but if you moderate your spending and live more like the locals it is extremely cheap to stay here. Of course it does make quite a bit a difference if you speak fluent chinese in terms of bargaining and what not. |

Yeah well...whatever. I never pay attention to those quality of life lists. It depends on what you are into and what you want out of life. I used to live in Vienna and HATED it. I found it tired, dead and boring. I mean...how many times can you go to the fcuking Opera and listen to Mozart? I much prefer living in Shanghai. -At least Shanghai is dynamic and alive. |

Well I don't know. Are you getting your money's worth in Shanghai? Shanghai is on the verge of being a cool city but it still in my opinion is a dump. Lots of places to go otu, you can have a lot of fun here. But still, it feels third world to me. |

Yep that's right. But still, much is way overpriced for what you are getting. |

Let us not define "living like an expat" to it's extreme. I feel one can live a better quality of life (again, not extreme) as compared to most of the locals with a reasonable cost of living index in SH. |

I think if you get to the stage where you're asking this question to yourself - well - get out.
Besides - who gives a toss about these survey's anyway. I mean REALLY! I read an article here: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,19766349-13762,00.html about the happiest places to be (I don't know how you judge happiness???). Out of the 178 countries - Australia is 139th and the USA 150th.
China is 31st.
The happiest place?
Vanuatu! WELL GO FIGURE. They live on an island - its summer all year round and they eat coconuts! |
