| Post subject: Need Advices - Must see places each city around the world |
Hello Everyone,
I assume that most people who visit this site are from different part of the world and would be able to give me advice on my 30-day around the world trip.
I am leaving Shanghai next year after completed my 2-year assignment. Before I go back to the US I want to take a well- deserved trip to cities I have not been before. This is a long trip so are planning this trip. Boyfriend and I plan to stay in each city three nights. We will be staying in the center of each city ?C (The Four-seasons Hotel in each city if there is one or other comparable Hotel in cities that do not have a Four-Season Hotel)
What are the three must see things in each city?
What are the resturants we should visit?
I would appreciate if you could give me your opinions and advices.
It would be interesting to see different people??s preferences.
Here is the route: From east to west ?C ends up in San Francisco.
Tokyo- Japan
Hong Kong- China
Bangkok- Thailand
Mumbai (Bombay)- India
Cairo ?C Egypt
Venice- Italy
Geneva- Switzerland
Paris- France
London (Possibly go to Scotland if time permits)
New York (11/23 for Thanksgiving with family)
San Francisco ?C Where home is.

Even though I am a Melbourne boy, I must say that a ferry in the sunshine in Sydney harbour offers the favourite views of many of my O/S visitors. Great ocean road in Victoria can also be spectacular in nice weather, but it's a long trip unless you make it an o/nite. Stick to Sydney and the harbour houses/opera house/circular quay/harbour bridge and you will have lasting memories of a beautiful part of the world.
Only other advice I can offer on your itinerary is to go north when you hit New York. Niagra falls is truly spectacular, but I don't know if the 'Maid of the Mist will be operating in November. Suspect not. Bit too commercial on the Canada side, but still amazing views. Try the barrell ride, it's not as bad as they say.  |

My favorite three "must see" sites were:
Eiffel Tower (of course)
St. Chapelle
Museum de Orsay
The Louvre is over-rated and too big to handle on a short trip. The Notre Dame is also beautiful but I thought that St. Chapelle was move interesting. A "must-see" side trip would be Versailles.
For restaurants, there are some many excellent restaurants in Paris it is hard to make a recommendation. Just go to a decent part of town and wander down a side street until you find a nice looking cafe or bistro and pop in for a try. For dining at night I recommend trying some of the non-french ethnic food, especially Algerian. But if your going to Egypt then maybe you'll have that covered before hand. |

I grew up in NYC -- been to Niagra Falls many times - indeed it is beautitul.
Sydney is on the must go list - heard so much nice things about it. |

What a great trip!
Of course there are must see things in all those places. However, for 30 days, it looks like you are trying to do alot and it basically means you add another day of travel time, roughly, for every city you add.. which translates to roughly 2 days per city of on the ground time. Not alot of time to do a lot of things If you reduce the number of stops, you give yourself more time at each place and not feel like you trying to smell the flowers from the back of a galluping horse. It would really depend on what your particular passion is.. culture? shopping? dining? nightlife? attractions? all these cities ( at least the ones on the list we've been too) have great options.
I know someone who left their corporate assignment, cashed in their options, and spent a year doing the around the world thing. They would pick a regional hub and spoke out to places for a few days or week at time. They were in Bangkok when we met them last. They used Bangkok as the hub for visiting SE Asia and India. We asked them if they if any of the trips they made were a waste of time, and while they did not say it was a total waste of time, they said were disappointed and did not have a good time in India.
There is a particular symbol for each city, that your should probably get your picture with, just to put it in your album.. Eiffel tower in Paris, The view across to Thames to Big Ben in London. The King Palace and temple in Bangkok. The Sphinx and Pyramids at Giza. With your schedule, if you really want to get into what London has to offer, you will not have much time for Scotland. Choices from there depend on your priorities. Bangkok would be great for Shopping. As far as I am concerned, there are almost no good deals for shopping in London or Paris unless you are going designer.. but then I am man and what do I know about "Shopping" ?
In London we stayed near Hyde Park.. lots of nice places with a few blocks of that.. The museums are great for a sense of history. Restaruants around Picadilly, while getting a lot of attention in the tourist rags, are over priced and the food was not that good at the places we picked out. A few of our friends who live there always took out to Indian or Paskistani places and the food was great. Taking the trip from London to Paris on the Eurostar was fun and interesting. Its only a 3 hour ride and you could get some good hotel ( though sounds like you have that covered ) deals by booking a eurostar ticket. |

Just 3 days in Italy. Such a shame. So much too see. Skip Geneva and go to Rome instead. Switzerland is just expencive and dull. |

This trip is to get a feel for each city - if like the city, will go back for longer stay.
Can proably stay 2 weeks in each country, especially Europeans countries with so much beautiful architectures and histories.
Many travel opportunity in the future.
