Post subject: China Mobile(Monternet) WAP, MMS and SMTP/POP settings

Hi All,

I know there are posts here and there about MMS settings but having just gone through setting up my phone, I thought I'd post the official website for it so people can refer to it in one place if needed. All the linked sites are in chinese only but with Google or Altavista you can sort of make sense of it.

WAP
The WAP information page is :
http://www.monternet.com/moneditor/cs/wap/wapguide/
The settings you need are:
Wap Home : http://wap.monternet.com
Gateway IP : 10.0.0.172
Port: 9201

if you have GPRS:
GPRS APN : cmwap
No Username/Password needed

if not then the
CSD number is: 17266
username: wap
password: wap
Type: Modem (or simulated)

MMS
MMS setup is found here:
http://www.monternet.com/moneditor/cs/help/mms/

APN: cmwap
Server Name: http://mmsc.monternet.com
Gateway: 10.0.0.172
(some phones link this info together with the wap setup)

SMTP/POP Mail
The info can be found at
http://mail.monternet.com/
http://mail.monternet.com/free/gb/Help_QA.htm#a15

First thing you've got to do is register on the mail site: http://mail.monternet.com
Its all in chinese but I had GoogleTranslate in another window to translate the options Very Happy
Choose the first plan which is the free one (its the one that says 0RMB/Month (0元/月) The others may be better if you have larger email needs.

Enter your mobile number and you'll get an SMS with a confirmation password.
Enter the confirmation password
Enter your password and a question/answer in case you loose your password.
again it ask you for the plan...

Once that's all set up you need to setup your PDA. The instructions are here.
http://mail.monternet.com/free/gb/Help_QA.htm#a15
I assume you've setup your GPRS, Wap, MMS already so the relevant info for you is

Outgoing SMTP Server: smtp.17288.com Port: 25
Incoming POP3; pop.17288.com Port: 110
Username: Your Mobile Number
Password: Whatever you entered in registration

After that you should be able to send/receive mail from your phone/PDA.
The email address is YourNumber@17288.com eg 137xxxxxxx@17288.com

fyi

If you have a Sony phone, SE has the settings for ALL the phones for almost ALL of the networks in the world, including China Mobile and Unicom.

Go to this link

http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=cn&lc=zh&ver=4000&template=ps3& zone=ps

Choose your phone, country, network, and input your phone #.

SE will text you a auto setting message. All you have to do is click "yes."

It even has the settings for most popular e-mail accounts.

Hmmm... A bit of snooping around my E680i reveals a monternet button. I go to the English version and it's kinda crappy. The 'reading' version has some serials, one of which is the Great Gatsby.

Is that it? Do I have to go through all of the above, or has it already been set up?

You need to ring China Mobile or go into their service office and tell them you want to cancel the subscription. I believe you pay 6RMB a month for WAP and Monternet services so if you don't use it its best to cancel. There's probably some neat SMS code you can send to 1861 to cancel it but i don't know what it is.

Alternative I think is to remove your MMS settings from your phone configuration. Not sure though if it'll stop you receiving MMS though.

Question - once this is set up, if someone were to send an email to 137xxxxxxx@17288.com, would my phone receive the email immediately? or would I have to check it? or perhaps there might be an SMS/MMS notification for me to check it?

Not sure about the SMS notification. I set mine to poll every now and then. your phone should have a setting for this and also a send/receive option.

I tried to setup email but the service doesn't actually send out SMS to me. I have to re-configure my phone to poll the email server, which can eat up the battery and also be latent.

Well, I finally found another provider that does email to SMS alert service. There url is http://www.ipipi.com. They are a bit expensive, but it does what I'm looking for. Wink (Also, doesn't have the spam bit of it)

Post subject: GPRS cost

How expensive is it to surf with China Mobile's GPRS service?
Checking e-mails on a phone, surfing with a PDA?

Fed up with figuring the settings for WAP/MMS/GPRS for your phone? Wish for some OTA (over-the-air) help? Good news for Nokia phone users! I found this site. All you need to do is click on "Get standard settings" and follow the instructions on the window that appears. All you need to do is choose your Nokia phone model, the country you're in, the mobile operator and your phone number. The configurations will be sent to you and you just need to save it in your phone. No fuss, no muss!

Errr. It works, sort of. I left it in my trousers and then put them in the washing machine.

Dont need a special sim card though.

I splashed out on the N95 when I was in Singapore, got it from the Nokia shop in Suntec City. They had a special ffer S$1088 and I got another S$41 back from the GST refund.

The N95 is good. I can use the GPS so I know where I am lost.

The O2 works but some buttons do not and it swithces itself off. The comapny that comes up with a waterproof mobile will have the world in their hands. This is the second phone that has gone in the drink. My first one fell in the fishpond.

The link that deppy gave is a godsend. Trying to talk to China Mobile and get sense out them is a pain.

Got the e-mail working now.
