Post subject: Top 3 Issues of Shanghai Tourism

The Travel Times is seeking information and views concerning the tourism service in Shanghai to foreigners. The newspaper is part of the Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administrative Commission, the government organization in charge of tourism of Shanghai.

The question is. "What do you think Shanghai should improve in tourism, especially for international visitors and foreign residents working in Shanghai?"

Primarely they are looking for the TOP 3 ISSUES.
Should it be more English information about Shanghai?
better english signage?
or better service in the tourism industry?
and if so which area specifically?

So this is your chance to have some input that may pave the way for some changes to be made in areas that affect tourists and foreigners in Shanghai.

But before responding, please consider the issues on a wider perspective, and then respond.

Smile

Creat some stuff for people to actually see and do after they've visited the bund, the pearl tower, xintiandi, fake market/ Nanjing road and the Shanghai museum. I mean have you BEEN on a river cruise on the Huang pu?? It's terrible...

It's a fun place to come to go to clubs/bars/restaurants - ie nightlife is good, but in my opinion the shops are terrible, the tourist attractions are third rate and people's hygeine levels need to be seriously addressed (in terms of kitchen and restaurant staff but also the boring thing about spitting - it's so repugnantly uncessary and is one of the worst things about the people here).

Make it prettier - it's ugly, most of the nice buildings are being torn down and nasty cheap ones being put up, foreigners are the only ones bothering to renovate the old ones with character and turning them into CHIC places to visit. There are hardly any green parks where you can actually chill and sit down on GRASS, have a picnic etc...it's crap.

For me, the lack of English isn't an issue - it's China, and it's up to me to learn the local language - not the other way round. There are plenty of guide books and advice on where things are and how to get by, street signs are in English and there are many western menu restaurants. It would help if the bus system was translated, this is a big issue and needs to be addressed.

So

1. Better tourist sights (ie SOME tourist sights eg museums and recreation)
2. Hygeine and safety - cleaner kitchens, no spitting, better toilets, seatbelts in cabs
3. Beautify it - take some pride in making an attractive city as well as going full pelt at modernising it.
