Hi all, I'm just about to move to live in Pudong, near to the river. I was wondering if there are any gyms around that area? I want to join one but don't want to pay masses
Hope you can help!
Thanks xx |

Not sure which river you mean... guess the huangpu.
In lujiazui there are basically two gyms... king's gym in pucheng lu and will's gym in superbrand mall. The will's gym is new and ok... should cost around 3K a year... |

There's Star Gym in Lujizaui in the China Development Bank building. Older, but the equipment is in decent shape. Can't say the same about the locker rooms though. 1800rmb for a year
Will's Superbrand - You shouldn't pay more than 2400rmb/year for the gym only membership. |

it is on Huamu Lu... the gym is part of an appartment complex (Pudong Century something)... is actually a really bad gym, as it is a residential gym with bad and few equipment... although managed by Will's. The one in superbrand mall is thus far the best i have seen in Pudong... best gyms are still iun Puxi. |

I've also recently joined Will's Gym at the Superbrand Mall. I can't remember exactly what I paid, but I thought it was very reasonable considering the facilities and equipment. Unlike some other gyms (King's, for example), the membership pricing is all up front, on a printed spreadsheet, and is non-negotiable. I really appreciate this, as I am allowed to evaluate the facilities based on fixed costs. I don't have to worry about getting ripped off, and the contract spells out (in Chinese) my rights and responsibilities as a member. Very professional.
All of the gym equipment is foreign (mostly USA) branded and seems well selected in terms of quality and functionality. Regarding the equipment, there are about half a dozen steppers and about a dozen treadmills. There are enough weight machines to cover every major muscle group. I appreciate that there is a pullup/dip station with variable weight assist. There's also a nice cable crossover station. This is not a gym for the hardcore gym rat. There is a pretty decent set of dumbbells, but this gym is most definitely not set up for serious free weight lifting. If you're not into lifting, there's a nicely sized aerobics/dance studio where they teach all kinds of classes, including dance and beginners yoga. There's also a spinning room with I figure about 20 cycles.
The real swanky part of this gym is the entire half of the real estate devoted to heated yoga rooms. This half of the gym is open only to members who pay a higher fee, but the bathrooms are more private and they have nice steam saunas as well. Since I'm not a yoga or sauna person, I chose not to pay for this stuff. The bathrooms that are open to the rest of the gym are also nice and clean. Lockers are decently size, and there are even small private lockers available for year long leases. I leave a set of trainers, work out clothes, and grooming products in there in case I don't have time to head home before heading to the gym.
The staff so far seems to be friendly and knowledgeable. There was a trainer there last night who showed me how to improve my concentration curl arm positioning. The ladies up front are friendly, attentive, and of course, attractive. Overall, I would say I'm really glad I signed up for membership. My body aches in the happy to know I'm alive and getting fit way
p.s. If for some reason you're interested, this gym also sells, through an independent salesperson, the BowFlex SelectTech dumbbell system. I doubt I would ever buy this now that I have a gym membership, but if you like working out at home, this system rocks. It's like having an entire rack of dumbbells but takes up the space of only one large pair. |

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention that Will's intends to limit membership at the Superbrand branch to a maximum of 800 at any given time. This assures that the gym will never get too crowded. Also, since this gym is very visible (all glass front), and at the Superbrand Mall (7th floor near main escalators and elevators) in Lujiazui, I expect a generally younger, smarter, better-looking and classier crowd of members than some of the older, more traditional, and cheaper gyms. Well, at least I hope that's what happens. Hey, exercise is great, and I'll do it with a rusty set of free weights and a bench held together by duct tape if it's all I have. But if I'm going to exercise in a well lit, clean, and shiny gym, I would like some eye candy to inspire my workouts |

I got the impression that their target is 800 and they're having trouble reaching it. They seemed pretty desperate to get members last time and called me twice to sweeten the deal after I told them I'd think about it. The final deal they offered was 3600 for 18 months, 1000RMB in vouchers for Saucony and 2 personal trainer sessions. |

Darn. Guess I should have held out. Oh well. I'm still pretty happy about my membership, but thanks for the added info. Hopefully, someone else who's interested in signing up will benefit from your experience and get a nice incentive package as well |

Does anyone know of a good gym in the Yangpu district? I heard about one at the Crowne Plaza Fudan, but am wondering what their rates are and how good it is. Any suggestions most welcome! Thank you! |

hi deschutz,
you might check out weidertera. it's in the cloud nine shopping mall (you need to take a sort of hidden elevator to get up there, you may want to ask someone for directions the first time). i lived in zhongshan park last spring and it was brand new then. there is definitely a pool there, i don't know how large it is though. anyway, just my 2 cents. good luck! any questions, feel free to PM me.
