| Post subject: Weekend Trips... also Wuzhen vs. Zhujiajiao? |
Hey everyone,
Any suggestions for good weekend-long trips outside of Shanghai? Preferably, anyways that is accessible by train or bus. Can stay overnight.
Also, been thinking about visiting either Wuzhen or Zhujiajiao. Anyone been to either? Which one is better? Suggestions for accomodations? Are there better water towns?
Any suggestions for weekend out-of-town places or activities near Shanghai would be greatly appreciated. Got visiting family members here this weekend.
Thanks.

Hang Zhou is a great weekend getaway. There's an express train that goes between Shanghai and Hang Zhou (approx 2 hrs, and 60 yuan each way). You can get the train tickets two days ahead of time at various locations. Train station in Hang Zhou is minutes by taxi from the famous West Lake. Hyatt and Shangri-la have hotels right by the lake. When I went, I booked an older hotel (can't remember the name) via elong.com. |

Hi there Cliff
My favourite is Putuoshan. Bit of an adventure to get there...but well well worth the effort. Lots of monasteries, hills, beaches....very tranquil. Its an island off Ningbo.
Also, went to XITANG recently. Its only an hour and a half from Shanghai- is a beautiful old water town which is not on the main tourist trail and so is quiet.
have a good one.

Oh hi Aloha...sorry been busy for a while.
It costs 200 rmb to go to Putuoshan. There is a bus from Nanpu Bridge (used to be by Shilipu Wharf- but think its changed) this bus takes you to Lujuzhuang (sp?) from where you catch a speed boat which takes you to Putuoshan.
Alternatively you can take an overnight ferry...which is probably slow, but I imagine quite fun! |

Hi Cliff,
Oh, I didn't manage to see your post earlier. we went to Zhou Zhuang and ZhuJiaJiao yesterday. Just a bunch of us, 6 to be precise.
Just a little intro, ZhouZhuang is indeed too crowded and too commercialise. We didn't really like it though it is bigger than ZhuJiaJiao. Although tired from the first destination (and the losuy and expensive lunch), we decided tp give ZhuJiaJiao a try since we are passing by on our way back. We found it much better and less crowded, peaceful and less commercial. Though we are tired, we would say we still enjoy this place better than the first. Taking a stroll down the stream or canal, looking at people selling fishes in their boats. (fresh jumping fishes at 2 -3 rmb, where they scale it for you on the spot). Some of them play with a little Peking Dog on the side walk. We even walked into an old lady house which is visited by the Mayor of Shanghai and ex-premier Zhu Rong Ji on the 31 March. We just miss the big shots by 11 days or so... it feels really peacful and relax there...
We had dinner in a restaurant (which is cheaper and better than in Zhou Zhuang) over seeing the canal, and by then it was 7pm... reflections of the lights from the restaurants on the river was beautiful. It will be even better if all their lanterns are light up! (some lanterns are not really working very well!)
Too bad we are slightly late that day that we didn't manage to visit the temples and some of the attractions. However, we agreed that we will be back someday. The whole journey cost us including everything (lunch, dinner, entrance fee, toll charges, petrol etc) in less than 250RMB per person.
I would recoomend that place as it is only less than 1.5 hours drive from Shanghai. I do not know about the others till I have been there.
Good luck.

I went to Putuo Shan last year and got another big lesson of "never believe what you heard"!!! Yes, you have to go to Lu Chao Gang now to take express yacht to Putuo shan and the second you put your feet on the island you have to buy an island ticket (we paid RMB 120 for each, and was told the price changes all year round depending the business), you'd better book your hotel and return tickets immediately (was told by locals that during budda's birthday, people will flood and sometime you can not buy the return tickets and seems budda has a birthday every month in lunar calender!), When i found out i have to buy a lot tickets to go to those temples on the island i just stopped and enjoyed myself exploring the island by foot. no need to take taxi ( only four on the island and never to be found, start price RMB 30. i suggest you don't buy any dried seafood here because my friend got his whole family sick with dried sea cucumber!!! I found a nice beach where you can see a sleeping budda in the near sea, which is really nice! walking at night along the small lanes sided by tall trees can be very relaxed (except mosquito), although i am not a fan of budda, but alway like the sacred feelings of it, which has been totally destroied by the scenes of travel groups one after another led by tourguides waving flags and yelling through microphone on the island!!! i lived in a RMB 300 famlily hotel (only have hot waters between 6pm and 9pm), in front my place is a five star standard hotel (must set for those rich, retired overseas chinese), but anyway, budda needs money, the more the better!!!
If you love seafood, you may go to Shen Jia Men, a next door island full of cheap sea food restaurant!!! and fun!!!
