We checked out the wood burning stoves in Shanghai a few months back and here were our findings....

Also, we just heard that a Chicago deep dish pizza place opened in Shanghai (although we haven't tried it). It's called CJ Chicago (don't know if it's the chain from the USA or not) and they only deliver (no eat in) - the phone # is 6415 1666. And they're open 24 hours! Pies are around 100RMB.

But, as far a non-wood burning ovens go (i.e gas ovens), the "best" pizza (and we use that word very loosely because being from the East Coast of the USA, nothing really compares in terms of gas-oven pizzas), try out New York Style Pizza right next to the Jing An Metro Stop (just below Windows bar). If you like italian thin crust style pizza.
La casbah on Huaihai Lu just down from Ambassy Club is
the best I've had and at 28-38 kuai each it is pretty cheap compared
to Una's and the like

I have no clue where CJ Chicago is - but I assuming it is somewhere in Puxi....The only thing I've found is the phone # for delivery. If you call you could ask them. I plan on trying one in the next day or two.

We were a little bit lost a few days ago. It was after 8 pm, and we were hungry. Normally this is not a problem in Shanghai. But all bets are off during Spring Festival. They were open, and their pizza was just how we remembered it to be. But attached to the pizza box was a menu for a restaurant we had never heard of before: CJ Chicago.

We scanned the menu, and one word stopped us in our tracks: Ditka. Ditka? DITKA! If a restaurant in China has a dish named after Mike Ditka it's got to be kind of authentic, right?

A large plate of Italian Seasoned Potato Wedges Fried to a Crispy Golden Brown in Olive Oil

And then -- holy cow -- we see another American original:

HARRY CARAY'S CHICKEN VESUVIO
A True Chicago original, oven roasted baked chicken sauteed with olive oil, garlic, white wine and served with potato wedges.

But what CJ Chicago really prides itself on is its pizza -- Chicago-style, deep-dish pizza. They claim to use the original recipe from Uno's Chicago Grill. And that is what we ordered a couple days ago, when we found ourselves in the no-restaurants-open-because-of-the-holidays-and-our-laziness situation. And, while we are definitely no experts on Chicago pizza, it tasted pretty damn good. And it was indeed quite thick -- 1.5 inches (about 4 cm) -- we measured it. (Because it was the holidays, and we were throwing health precautions to the wind, we also tried to order something called Hackney's Onion Loaf -- "Beer-Batter" and "Golden Fried" -- but that wasn't available.)

CJ Chicago's pizzas are all 9-inches (23 cm) in diameter and 94 RMB, regardless of the toppings you choose (we got spinach, mushroom, onion, tomato and black olive). And because of the thick crust, a 9-incher is enough for two people. (You need to allow around an hour for delivery of a Chicago pizza, because it takes longer to cook.) The restaurant, which opened January 24, seems to share the Yellow Submarine kitchen, and like Yellow Submarine is open for delivery only (they deliver out of 1634 Beijing Xi Lu, near Jiaozhou Lu). They deliver 24 hours a day, too -- which makes Shanghaiist think we might be eating some deep-dish pizza Monday morning during the Super Bowl. They also deliver cheap drinks: Tsingtao for 5 RMB and "International Beer" (read Budweiser and Heineken) for 10 RMB. Delivery is free, too. Just don't forget to get out of the house to go to the gym later on.

WARNING!!!!!!

If anyone calls CJ Chicago pizza, make sure you SPECIFY deep dish pizza. We didn't know that they had more than one kind of crust (the woman who answered the phone didn't ask us if we wanted thin or thick crust), so we ended up with a pretty bland "meat lovers" pizza that could have been delivered by Melrose, Papa John's, or Pizza Roma. In summary, a very dissapointing expereince after waiting an hour for something different, and ending up with the same old, same old Shanghai cardboard special.

Based on the lack of taste, our expectations aren't good for the deep dish. We'll try one soon and let you know the skinny.....

There is a place at JiAn Temple Exit 2 (line 2 subway) called New York Style Pizza... They serve it by the slice or the whole pie. Generally it is not bad (depending on the cooks day I think). Service sucks ,,, but the beer is cold and reasonably priced... 10RMB a slice! I think 100% better than either Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, Melrose or Happy Pizza.... Give it a try and hope the cook and staff are having a good day!!!!

There is a place at JiAn Temple Exit 2 (line 2 subway) called New York Style Pizza... They serve it by the slice or the whole pie. Generally it is not bad (depending on the cooks day I think). Service sucks, try to keep the chinese music off,,, somehow just does not fit a pizza joint,,,but the beer is cold and reasonably priced... 10RMB a slice! I think 100% better (maybe 50% on a bad day,, but definetely better) than either Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, Melrose or Happy Pizza.... Give it a try and hope the cook and staff are having a good day!!!!

By the slice sounds the best way to go! Pizza is a snack not a dinner deal right? cant get excited about it at all.............bread with 10 cents worth of toppings!

Shanghai has a new contender for best pizza in town (wood fired type). Went to try Mediteraneo last week, it just opened about a week ago. It is set in a beautifully renovated villa, and has one of the best gardens in Shanghai, with the food to match! It's on Wuding Lu near Jiangsu Lu.

Tried NYC pizza after reading this thread. The crust was nice, base not so much. the base was abit too crispy and oily for my liking, like it was fried. the peperoni was pretty ****, no taste of pepper or meat. cheese was ok.

Just had Hello Pizza. 4 cheese was OK and the spagbol was not what im use to but not at all bad. Both would be improved with copious amounts of tobasco

I just had pizza at Jimix Seve this week and it was really good! I'd been scared to try eating pizza in this country again after one disastrous experience at California Pizza Kitchen. That place does not deserve to use the CPK name, it's not the same stuff at all. But at Jimix Seve I had a pesto pizza and that's all I can go by so far but it was delicious. Very good if you like thin crust pizza. They're on Beijing Lu near Shimen Lu. They have a nice outdoor patio inside and the waiters were uncharacterically (for China at least) attentive and polite. I definitely plan to go back.

This is such a great thread.. the pizza market in Shanghai is still changing. The I have had are NY Style and Hello. Have yet to try a PapaJ. Almost went for it at Pasti the other night, but chose Lasagna which was great.
