Post subject: Authenticated/Notarized Marriage Certificate

My wife and I need to notarized our marriage certificate in China for banking purposes. Our marriage certificate was issued in the United States around 2001 and I have the originals with me here in Shanghai. How do I go about notarize and then authenticate the marriage certificate in China? Do I need to translate the document first? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!

You need to translate it as well before you have it notarized, unfortunately I don't know where in Shanghai.

Oh, are you in for a surprise!

The process differs from state to state in the US, but it helps to think of the process as a chain of trust. Generally speaking you need to have the original marriage certificate as issued by the county clerk with a raised seal. This document is then presented to the clerk of the county court for authentication and then sent on to the state Secretary of State for further authentication. Once you have the endorsement of the state Secretary of State (or Lieutenant Governor), the document must be vetted by the Chinese consulate serving the state where the marriage license was issued. Once you have these documents, you need to present them to the Shanghai Notary Public for an offical translation and seal.

In some states you can ommit the step involving the clerk of the county court.

I am not sure why a bank would require this document from you, but you might try to verify whether just taking the marriage certificate to the Shanghai Notary Public for an official translation will suffice.
