| Post subject: Hiring a Driver and Baby Seats |
We're moving to Shanghai with our two young children. We plan on hiring a driver because we're not too sure if the taxis have seatbelts for the car seats and if taxi drivers would have patience installing and uninstalling the 2 car seats.
So my question is if we hire a driver for say 40 hours a week, does the driver just sit around at our house and we're allowed to use him anytime between the agreed upon hours? Seems kind of strange but is this how it works? |

Yep, that's pretty much how it's done. Drivers do a lot of sitting around and just waiting. Most drivers won't sit around and wait in your living room, on your couch watching TV. They'll often wait in the car or carpark or whereever it is you park the car and you'll give them a buzz on their cell phones when you're ready to go out.
However, depending on how big your house/apartment is, some people have a tiny "hang out" room for their drivers. |

Most taxis in Shanghai do not have rear seat belts, and the few that do probably couldn't wait for the installation/removal of two seats, particularly if loading/offloading at curbside (as opposed to in your compound). Definitely go with a car and driver if you'll need to use the baby seats.
As for the driver, anniboodk has it right re: what the drivers do all day. |
