| Post subject: Be careful out there.. tongren - nanjing lu. |
While I don't usually like to spread what may be rumors, I received this in my email from the guy it happened to.. signed by him with his phone. I just want to let people know they should be careful out there.
**************
Last Sunday night, after finishing work (Around 11:30 PM I work in Xintiandi) I went to Tongren Lu with my friend, we were in a bar drinking and I figured I needed more money to continue my good spirits for the night so I went to the ATM. There is only 1 ATM machine in the area, located at the China Bank at the Kerry Centre (Nanjing Lu and Tongren Lu). Recently it has become a haven for the beggar parade, women carrying rented babies and kids working for the same mob etc. As this is a hot spot for people spending money, you have many restaurants, The Portman Hotel, Malones and the bars on Tongren Lu just to name a few. Warning! It has turned into a dangerous place!
When I left the ATM enclosure I was suddenly accosted by the mob of kids and women carrying babies, I made my way clear of them and crossed the street at Tongren Lu. Suddenly a woman was trying to get into my right hand pocket to steal my money. I caught her hand and held it up.
Suddenly I was attacked from behind by a group of 4 women, one I think was a Lady man, hitting me on the head with high heel shoes and I don't know what else. I was dumbfounded, couldn't believe what was happening.
I've been in Shanghai for 6 years and never had anything like this happen, so I thought nothing would ever happen to me. But as I stood there bleeding all over from my head, I began defending myself. I managed to ward off the attackers long enough to run into the street and flag a taxi, but the driver got scared and drove off, leaving me prone to more attacks.
I held up some cash thinking this would stop them but by now they had the taste of blood and were intent on taking me down. I pushed them back and managed to grab another taxi who took me to the hospital where I got 20 stitches and a tetanus shot. Then I had to go to the police station, and ended up spending the next 9 hours going from one police station to another being treated as a criminal until I finally made a report. I was in shock and feeling noxious all night. The police just intimidated me but I was insistent, after all I did nothing wrong, and I wanted justice! Period!
I finally met a detective at 9 AM who actually listened to me and was
empathetic. He took a a proper report and I believe he will act on
this. I got home about 10 AM.
I have since heard that on the same night the exact thing happened to 3 other people, and the night before to 2! There is no excuse! The police must know about this!
The area where this happened is where a lot of foreigners go to hang out eat and drink. There is only 1 ATM in the area and now it is a target for unscrupulous beggars and thieves who will hurt their victims. I managed to hang on to my things. The others weren't so lucky. Looking back I probably should have handed over my cash, but I didn't even see it coming. The doctor says I will be alright in 4 or 5 days, but for the moment i'm still freaked out, angry, and still in shock. Anyway I just wanted to let you and others know whats going on, and to hopefully prevent this from happening to other innocent people. Shanghai is changing! I see it everyday. I know I'm not the only one seeing this.
Take care-
PS I've been working in Xintiandi for 6 years and have been to just about every night spot in Shanghai, never had any violent confrontations here of any sort. |

I bet you if every manager of a business on that street got a copy of this, the police would get the kind of pressure they need to do something. That area has a bit of a reputation anyway. but not much violence reported on this board until recently ( this and skylines incident ) . However, if the word starts getting around that this road is really dangerous, say goodbye to a bunch of the of the businesses there. It will chop their customer base by a lot. |

I can attest to the troubles at Tongren Lu. Problem is 9 out of the 11 or so bars there are in on it. There is only 2 reputable places on that street, the rest are shitholes. |

Search the China Daily forums for some older stories about Judys Too & a few other places there. Mine & the above are not isolated cases on Tongren. |

it really is getting worse and worse....
you can't go anywhere anymore without being bugged by those idiots. i never noticed and am quite curious to know if chinese people are also bothered by beggars, or if they usually only hang out in front of spots known to be frequented by expats mostly ?
as long as locals dont complain i bet the authorities here pretty much dont give a damn |

i think the locals do complain, fids, good to see you here again, btw.
The local people have been complaining all the time about the mobs that send out women carry babies on the street and all that other **** related. But we have no idea what are those police doing, well, if you stay here for long that I assume you should known this local saying that police are just mobs in uniforms. |

Actually i just got back from a meeting today with a local guy, he said the beggars are at all the bars and restaurants, even the Chinese ones. He listed a couple of local clubs he goes to and said the beggars are always there.
Why anyone would go to Tong Ren lu past 9pm is beyond me. And with all the idiot sex tourist there these incidents are just going to get worse and worse. As if the police care, and who can blame them. |

Thats not really true. They dont care about anyone but those who are well connected. laowai who have been here awhiel and know the game are well protected too. Just like the bars that "work" with the police. |

fair go here, I know the beggars thing is a problem, and that they are all run by gangs and the mob, but I was all told to just leave them alone, I don't talk to them, I don't make eye contact, i just keep my head down and move along.
I saw some yank looking guy there the other night and he was making a kid jump for money like a dog for treats, then eventually he crossed the road and got into a cab, now that pissed me right off. If your gonna give them money then do it, if your going to ignore them then do it, but jackasses like that stuff it up for the rest of us, we might look back and say that actions taken by those that have aggravated the beggars have lead to the escalation.
not saying the bloke attacked deserved it or anything, but there are expats out there that stir the beggars up.
I'm john laws thank you for listening |

The most true statement ever to be posted on here. I was involved in an incident on Tongren Lu about 1 year ago where a mate was nearly killed. That is NO exaggeration. The CCTV footage was apparently "not working" that night. It was too incriminating. Seriously, if you are involved in any incidents here, do not get the police involved. It IS your fault. ALWAYS. |

Wrong, police only care about their wallets and their behind. First and foremost, they must take care of people with connections; Second, they must take care of the people have or willing to give them "protection money"; Third, they want to do as little as possible, so if you are insisting on pressing charges, they might just take it out on you. |

We were speaking to a friend yesterday and he said that the exact same thing happened to him on that exact same street corner, only when the guy hit him on the head with the shoe he turned around and 'belted the living crap out of him' (as blackadder would put it) and the beggar backed down and fled.
I think that may be my reaction as well, some days I swear I WISH someone would try and pull a stunt like that on me just so that I may get rid of some of this latent aggression built up by pollution, traffic, weather, cultural frustrations, etc. A nice uncomplicated black and white scenario. Chances are however that good sense would prevail and I'd make a run for it. |

I think all it would take is for a newspaper to pick up the story for the gov to take action.
The last thing they want is for the rest of the world to think that China is unsafe,
with the oLIMPics and international attention on the way. |
