Post subject: Internet through a WiFi router

Hello,

I recently bough a TP-LINK wireless router (TL-WR340G), but couldn't set up the network to access China Mobile's internet with it. The connection to the router works fine, and I could access the set-up page at http://192.168.1.1, but it is in Chinese and there is no English manual available.
On top of that, I renamed the connection from TP-LINK to MyNetwork and lost the connection.

Did anyone buy TP-LINK router before?

Please give me some directions on where to look for information on WiFi networking with TP-LINK devices.

I have the same router, the guy from the shop set mine up for RMB 50 all but the WEP security which me and the GF managed to muddle through and sort which is important. Perhaps whoever you bought it from could supply the same service?

Probably that is why they gave me their mobile number.
what's WEP security? Is it keeping other people from accessing your network?
I will go and change the router to something with an English manual tomorrow.
By the way, how much did you pay for it?

Off the top of my head around RMB 220 plus the install fee.

You need to create a 10 digit code that consists of 8 numbers and 2 letters to enable the security, otherwise your connection will be open for anyone else in range to use.

Many people will connect to your Wi-Fi router if you don't enable security, WEP is low level Security but still OK.

1) Use a cable to configure the router, its easier.

2) Plug in the router
Plug the computer into the router (you can plug an ethernet cable into any of the 4 jacks not marked WAN
3) Plug in the ADSL modem (or whatever you use) to the jack marked WAN on the back of the router.

4) Open up a browser and go to http://192.168.1.1

Note that the TP Link admin page doesn't work in Safari, so use IE or Firefox

5) Type in the user/pass - admin / admin

6) Click 网络参数, then WAN口设置

If you are on ADSL, choose PPPoE and put in your user name / pass
click save (保存)

Wait a few seconds, then try go to a website - www.google.com is a good test. It should work, if it doesn't check you've typed in the user/pass correctly.


Once you have that going do the wireless security. The tplinks don't work well in WPA, so use WEP

Go to the admin page again (192.168.1.1, admin /admin)

click 无线参数, 基本设置

Put in a name for your wireless - usually something meaninful other than tp-link, ctc, or linksys would be an idea.

Choose a channel - 1, 6, 11 are distinct channels, if you have trouble with wireless kicking off a lot change the channel to one of those.

Click 开启安全设置 (place a checkmark there)

Choose WEP

underneath you'll see a bunch of boxes, and 1 - 4
on the line marked 1, click 密 钥 类 型 and choose 64bit

in the line marked 密 钥 内 容, put in a password

This should be made up of the numbers 1 through to F (base 16)
eg choices are:
0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A B C D E F

The password needs to be 10 characters long.

Click save again, and you have wireless security using WEP, and the password chosen.

Hi again,

everyone thanks for replies, computersolutions thanks for the detailed response.
I went back and changed the router to D-Link DL-624+A, so your instruction does not fully apply to my case, but I already understood from what I saw and what you wrote, that I probably set up everything right myself.
I went to D-Link admin page at http://192.168.0.1 and typed in my PPPoE username and password. I have also disabled any wireless security to check if that's the problem. But it can't be the issue anyway, because I am trying to connect to internet with CABLE plugged in the computer and the router.
So, basically, I have the connection with my router (through cable or WiFi w/o security), I am able to open the admin page, I have input PPPoE username and password, but I have no internet connection.

So, important questions for me now are:
1) What is wrong with my setup
2) If I successfully set up internet connection with your help, how can I set up WPA security and use it?

Right now I am extremely interested in your answers to the first question.

The attached image is of the D-Link PPPoE setup page with my username and password already in.

This topic is updating faster than any chinese girl's blog, but the internet connection is now working. Apparently, it started working just after I went to DHCP page (please see screenshot) and 'cloned' the MAC address (though this was not the first time I did it). Now I have internet connection both through the cable and via WiFi.

So the only question now is about the wireless security. Although I would like to understand what changed, anyway.

P.S. I also noticed that the connection is somewhat SLOWER now, at least via WiFi, though I am still the only person using it. Seems like the router slows everything down a bit, even though it is a 54Mb one.

Go back and swap it for the TPLink, Dlinks are seriously sucky.

It seems D-Link could in fact be not a good device, the connection speed drops from 140Kb/s to 60 when I unplug the cable and use WiFi.
I will probably not be able to change it again, this router is more expensive than TP-Link and they don;t like to return money.
Then again, cable connection never dropped, so it's not all bad.
