Post subject: Which villa community?

My husband and I are planning to relocate to Shanghai in the near future with our 6 month old and we are looking into Pudong villa communities. We are looking for a community with nice facilities (gym, pools, etc...) and relatively spacious and green.

I'd love to hear some opinions on the various communities- which they'd recommend and why. Also, are there golf clubs or social clubs centered around golf or venues (like country clubs)? Does a lot of social life revolve around which villa community you are in?

The best communities if you have kids are located close to Carrefour in JinQiao:

Green Court (probably the most beautiful compound in Shanghai when it comes to green areas and open spaces around the buildings, within walking distance of Carrefour, local shopping, massage, DVD shops, restaurants etc.)
Shimao Lakeside (very beautiful and quiet area)

Other compounds include:
Tiziano Villas (very beautiful and quiet, it's far from shopping though!)
Regent Garden (good location compared to Carrefour and Metro Shopping Mall, but they're still building there)
Xiang Mei Garden (where I live, lots of playgrounds for kids and also lots of green areas)
Shimao Riviera Garden (famous for the surrounding areas, very good location when it comes to shopping local)
Garden View (another beautiful area)

These are only to mention a few!

Basically it all comes down to how much you want to pay as the rents go from 500,- to 25.000,- USD/month

Hi - we live at Tomson Golf Villas which is set around a golf course in the Jinqiao area which is a popular education and shopping area for daily living for expats. We have very spacious homes here, with lots of green space, lovely street plantings, our own lawn and patio, a couple of small grcoery stores on site, a shuttle bus, several outdoor playgrounds and an indoor baby playground. It is 10 minutes to the major supermarket from here by car. The downside is you can't really walk to anywhere from here unlike Green Court apartments referred to above, for example. We have the golf course, driving range, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts and gym on site. Its a quiet compound with a mixture of Australian, US, European and wealthy Chinese living here. I wouldn't say social life revolved around the compound you are in. It is more likely to occur through playgroups, school, work colleagues and expat associations. Many people in this area take out a membership to use the facilities at Viscaya, another copound that is very popular and has a gorgeous resort-style pool, several restaurants, day spa etc. - all very nice. Green Villas is very popular as it has nice houses and gardens, and is walking distance to many things. Can be hard to get into because of this. Pudong itself is a good choice for ease of getting around and proximity to other families and facilities that are geared to that. We also have the community center here, which runs lots of courses and social events for expats. The Kanqiao area of Pudong has some beautiful communities such as Bellewoods, but they are a looong way out compared to Jinqiao - for us it is the happy medium as it does not take long to get Downtown from here. Hope that helps!
