| Post subject: Studying Mandarin in Shanghai uni ! |
Hello all, my first time posting here in ShanghaiExpat !
It's really good to know that this kind of webforum exists.
I'm not an expat myself, just a normal graduate uni who'd be studying mandarin for about a year in Shanghai starting next semester ( September 2007 )
My place of choice falls either JiaoTong or Shanghai University.
I've heard only not-too-good rumours about FuDan mandarin languange teaching.
Maybe someone can confirm this
Any expats, or students of mandarin languange can share their opinion between these 2 university ? as far as learning mandarin languange goes ?
things like :
1. how's the teaching quality ? experienced teacher or ...
2. how's the environment nearby ? is it easy to get groceries, food and stuff ?
3. I know JiaoTong is in the heart of the city ... which makes it super-convinient =).
is Shanghai Univ is far from the heart of the city ?
4. Any opinion on number of international students that are also studying in these Unis ?
where they come from etc ?
Thank you !

Most Universities here use students to teach the expat classes (the students get paid very little) so don't expect high quality learning. Fudan is probably one of the worst when talking to expats studying here.
One of the best schools is Shanghai Music Academy, that is if you want to learn a lot in a short period of time. |

One of my foreign friends had learnt mandarin in both jiaotong and shanghai University before he went back. And he enjoyed his study very much. And you want to study mandarin for about a year.So I think it's good to go to a university.
Shanghai university is in zhabei district. It's also convinient to take subway to go anywhere and takes about 15 minutes to get to the heart of the city.
Jiaotong university is in xujiahui district which is one of the central areas in shanghai.
It's easy to get groceries, food and stuff in the two universities. There are some supermarkets, many resturants and the shopping center around them.
Take care. |

I am right now in jiaotong university learning chinese, its a great learning exp , and as far as students teaching chinese is concerned , i think for beginners a person who teaches should be knowing both english and chinese, so for beginners class its all young teacher as u go to intermediate level they are all older and they speak only chinese, and that helps you to improve ur language
the sem will start in sept
