Post subject: PS3 Questions...

Hey all, sony announced today they're going to launch another 200 titles by March with 150 of them being online so I'm thinking I should pick one up. I've read a few posts here though and I'm sort of confused on some of the specifics of buying a PS3 in China.

1) Can you get it chipped? If so does that break the region lock?

2) Are ripped games available yet? I don't really feel like paying 400RMB for a game in China, it just seems like a waste.

3) If you get a pirated copy do they work for online play?

4) any suggestions on where to pick one up and for what price? I've seen a few posts on this, but they're a little old

Thanks in advance guys.

Hi

As far as i know, there is no region restriction with PS3 you can play whatever region the Game is. as of now, there is no chip yet available to play pirated one and if so, for sure it wont work with online same as Xbox360.

As tsalb8 says, the games are currently region free. So far it has also played every DVD i have put in it including copies.

The UK versions don't have the PS2's emotion chip meaning there are 'issues' when you try to play older PS and PS2 games on it.

I think the ability to get it modded without Sony countering it is a long way off yet. Sony are continually updating the software, i have had 4 updates since i bought it, so i think until the software is at a finalised stage then its difficult to mod or probably pointless as the real power with this machine will be its future development and by modding you will probably lose that.

The games are indeed region free , and i've also picked up two dvd's with different region codes that played ( have to check where they are from as it is official that the japanese and american machines play both country codes ! ) . ps2 games are not region free and as GC said, even if they're from the same region as your machine there is no guarantee they will play.

As for the chipping , I would not bother. Even if it would be possible , with every update ( that you will need to access the online store and to play online ) they will eliminate the possibility of playing copied games...

I am not too chuffed about online play out of China. It takes forever to download via the ps3 ( updates and demos ) and certain games : Resistance Fall Of Men for example, can't even be played out of china....

my colleague referred me to this one , telling me they have the best selection of games, and from tomorrow also The Darkness ( Rainbow Six Vegas in a couple of days ) . No idea about the price of a ps3 there. http://shop33015214.taobao.com/ there on 277 Fuying Middle Road ( Ruwan district )

For the time being I would wait for a price drop, the games at the moment, are simply not worth it I reckon.
I paid 6k i think including two games, two controllers and the hdmi cable somewhere on beijing lu ( i think you and me pm'd about this shop once, it's now on the opposite side of the road )

In shenzhen they are 5800RMB and then you have to pay a bit for games.
Most places are only stocking Wii and accessories for that. Only 3 places out of 30 have
PS3 at Dongmen Markets.

They are also waiting for the new thin PSP to come out as they make more off those in terms of games and
downgrading for playing copied games

As far as I know it is possible to play copied PS3 games but it involves downloading the games and putting them on the PS3 hard drive and playing them that way. I have seen PS3 iso's available to download from several torrent sites, so there must be some truth to it.

I have been looking for PS3 lately, so this is good information. One question I have is DVD region compatibilty.
Would original region 2 UK DVD's play on a PS3 from Japan, which is also region 2?
Went to the computermall, next to Intercontinental Hotel in Pudong and the asking price for a 60 Gb PS3 from Japan was 4000 RMB.

Quick Question.
If I buy a PS3 in HK, will there be any issues with the power supply, does HK have same voltage as Mainland China? Please need urgent help as am going to HK tomorrow. Thanks

well if i can get it for this price then I will buy it, I was stupid not to ask at duty free in HK but am sure it would have been more expensive. Anyway am into tennis, boxing, racing..........the usual boring stuff, what games do you have?

i've got ridge racer, fight night, resistance fall of men, call of duty 3, f.e.a.r, virtua tennis, nhl2k7, nba2k7, motorstorm... if you want , borrow them for a while, they're all not really worth buying them...

Just checked HK ebay site and 60gb PS3's going for HK$4200, seems reasonable enough. Hope I have enough time to find the place where to buy, any shops in Kowloon? Like in a shopping mall?

fight night is not bad, but gets very repetitive if you play if for a couple of days in a row. the online modus is not quick enough to really enjoy it. virtua tennis is no fun alone and there is no online modus. I really dont think it's worth it to shell out 400 RMB for one game. If you like , borrow them, and find out for yourself, but i was disappointed.
if you like shooters , Rainbow Six Vegas is just out and the review reads like it's awesome. so does the Review of THe Darkness. Resistance Fall of Men is awesome, but you'll have it finished in less than three days if you play it a lot. Online Modus dont work from China and I have not picked it up again to play it again.
I hear good things about formula one, but have not bought it yet.
The Elder Scrolls : Oblivion is fantastic, but takes up a lot of time to really enjoy it. Spent nearly the entire may holiday on it and am far far from finishing it, and no use to just play it for an hour.
