Post subject: DMV Car Registration for short trip back

Might be going back to states (Southern California) in a few weeks for a short visit. Since I only plan on staying for a week or two I do not want to get my car registration renewed (currently not driving) for the entire year but it seems even if I only need the car for a few days they require me to renew it for the entire year. Does anyone know if there is anyway to get a temp DMV (Department of Motor Vechicle) or any other way around this in California?

thanks,

John

I meant the yearly car registration which has to be renewed every year and pay fee based on the cars value.

For a couple of weeks sounds like renting a car would be much less hassle and probably less expensive. Not only otherwise do you have to deal with registration fees and excise taxes, but insurance as well. Then cars that have sat for a while often have other minor problems to deal with such as dead batteries, seized brakes, etc. These problems can show up anytime during your stay. You could be spending the 2 weeks messing with your car rather than enjoying your trip home. There are a lot of relatively inexpensive 2 week rental plans, especially from smaller less well known auto rental agencies.

Yeah still have minimum insurance on my car but tried to cut cost on the dmv registration....now trying to see how I can still use the car on short trips back. I heard from a friend that can get a temp registration (effective for 2-3 days) from dmv if say need it to fix car or something anyone know anything about this?

I think you can extend the car registration for one or two months if it needs fixing to pass the smog test, but that's only when you need smog test for registration renewal, which is once every 3 or 4 years? I don't know about other scenarios.

Like Renovator said, the best and cheapest way I think it is just rent a car. But in CA, car rental companies don't provide liability insurance, so unless you are on business (which hopefully your company will have blanket liability insurance), you will have to buy liability insuranse from the rental company. But overall, it is still cheaper than trying to maintain a car.
