| Post subject: Hiring a Driver - Questions |
We are in the process of conducting interviews for drivers and I will
like to hear what experiences you've had, especially if you hired them
indepedently i.e. not part of the expat salary package.
If you don't mind sharing,
1) How much do you pay them per month?
2) How many hours do they work a day?
3) Any other meal or insurance allowance ?
4) What are their work hours? How much do you per over time hour ?
5) Are they on any sort of contract with you?
6) Besides their driving experiences etc, what other things should I
need to know?
We can't seem to get a candidate that doesn't smoke. How do you deal
with them? I have a toddler and am myself very sensitive to such
smells. Will appreciate hearing some experiences with direct hires.
TIA. |

1. 2000-2500 base salary.
2. that is for 8-9 hour day.
3. 20rmb day meals - insurance, don't know.
4. 8 - 6 one hour for lunch. overtime 15rmb/hour weekdays, 20rmb/hour weekends
5. usually 3months/6months
6. English speaking will cost more - a lot more.
7. 99% smoke. You might try for a female driver - 99% don't smoke.
One last thing - your driver is human - don't leave him/her sitting in the car waiting for you in 35C heat.
On overheated driver is not safe - even if you don't think about his/her well being - think about your safety.
You can get cheaper, sure, but there are many scarey drivers out there. |

1. I agree with Bonnie (if you want a good driver)
2. As many as you need as long as you pay overtime (depends on the salary level as well)
3. Meals are up to you, normally they pay themselves
4. I agree with Bonnie
5. Yes, according to the new law you need to sign a contract, this also means you have to pay their medical insurance as they work for you full time!!!
English speaking drivers start at 5.000 and up. You might as well rent a car with driver from Herts instead as it'll be cheaper in the end (usually around 10.000 a month) and you wont have to worry about paying salary, insurance etc. and if the driver is sick you'll get a replacement.
Most drivers are pretty good, especially those where you rent the car with driver. As Bonnie says, there are many bad, very bad drivers out there and a human life here in China is pretty cheap. If your driver kills somebody while driving, you're going to be financially responsible because you hire him/her! |
