Post subject: Places to buy cheap items?

Does anyone know a night market that has things like clothes, towels, shoes, etc? Maybe one close to Xuhui, but anyone is great! And the times it is open?

Also does anyone know a cheap place to by things like towels and bedding?

I have been having problems finding large bath towels that are less than 40RMB. I also need slippers and shower shoes for the gym and cannot find any cheap ones.

1. Shanghai didn't seemed to have these night markets...

2. Try Qi Pu Lu or if prefer near Xuhui, there is also a very old textile stuff market just outside Ciao Xi Lu metro station (opposite Ikea, no. 3 line) inside there's a lot of textile things like bedding, towels etc.

i think qipu lu is only until 6pm

I'm not sure what you're definition of "cheap" is, but Carrefour can supply everything on your list. The one in Zhongshan Park is close to XJH. Or, if you go down to the Shanghai Stadium, there's a Century Mart, which is run by the Lianhua chain. It's a little cheaper than Carrefour. They have pretty much the same stuff as Carrefour, except they don't have the higher end stuff, and they don't have things that are stocked specifically to appeal to the Western shoppers.

Possibly true but you can't beat the aroma of sweat and the energy of Qi Pu Lu, I personally go there for the "Na Dee Ning".

Sichuan Bei Rd used to have all the discount sheets and towel stores, if they haven't been torn down. If you are looking for plain and not patterned sheets, it's a bit of a hunt but you can get some good deals. You can go there after your visted Qi Pu Rd market as they're in the same area. I think the men's Polo, Ralph Lauren etc, etc, shirts, kid's clothes and chinese styled jackets are great value. You can get some great bargains if you work at it. I agree with dr3x320..........just like the old China that is fast disappearing.

Shanghai Television area also has a building that has this stuff also, its a bit cleaner, quieter environment then Qi Pu Lu also. It's almost directly across the Shanghai TV Building in Puxi, can't remember the street name, it should be near Nanjing Lu though, damned if I can remember it Sad

If you are looking for clothes for your kid, try Ni Hong Er Tong Guang Chang. Its at Pu An Road. It has a very wide selection of children clothes at a very cheap price.

i think the price for all the stuffs in qipu lu s/b cheaper than carrefour,
the only problem is whether u have a good bargaining skill.

and maybe also b/c the sellers think foreigners usually are quite rich therefore, they ask for higher price.

Looking for "bag, lolex, gambo"? The metro stop at the Science & Technology Museum would be the place to go. Haven't seem bath towels though.

And if they ask how long you've been here, make sure you say at least "a couple of years." The starting price will drop and you'll get a better low end. It doesn't matter if you're just visiting. They won't know.
