| Post subject: Shanghai Salaries |
Hi,
I came here from the states about one year ago. I was hired from the states but by a european firm here. I came right after college on a very introductory level salary, which is 15000 rmb a month. I have been here a year and it is time to renegotiate my contract. My feeling is that I should get a substantial raise since they want to retain me, as well as I have surpassed my goals and done a good job. I was curious what other who have had some similar experience may think about this. |

haha, introductory level of salary here is usually one zero less for many.
you got a decent package already, but since your company feels a new college grad was worth 15000, surely one with one year's experience is now worth mroe right? try and get as much as you can, if not in salary bump, then in other benefits. but i can tell you, i know of entry level people get less than 20% or what you get paid and many of them have been kick ass workers.

Ridiculous post. 15,000/month - for what? A beer distributor? An accountant? A teacher? If you don't know what the going range is for your job I'd say you aren't worth a raise. |

I am sorry. I should of included more information. I appreciate those of you who requested it politely.
I work for a British Construction Consultancy firm. I am a Marketing Executive who is also managing a small number of employees. I have surpassed my goals and have been given more responsibility.
Yu888 Thanks for the feedback, it makes me feel better about my situation. I felt like the initial salary was good and I am not complaining. |

Even if you're really critical to the firm, asking for a large raise is a sure way to get people a bit p'ssed off(either your boss or your coworkers). If your job is at all sales-related, you could ask for a modest raise by Chinese standards (say 15-20%) and a bonus if you exceed your targets. |

check how much somebody would earn in the UK with your background/experience level. I take it that you're American so you could also easily work in the States or somewhere else, so you shouldn't be limited to a local or expat-local salary. 15,000 RMB is net, brut? Any housing allowance, etc? If you can't play with your actural salary try to include some perks. |

I think everybody wants a raise but not everyone deserve it.
Depending on what you have done during this year, if you brought more clients if the profit is higher because of you then you may ask them to consider giving you a raise. |

If u're getting an european salary I'll say this is kinda low for an abroad position, however just like yu888 said 15000 for people here, u're getting 3 times the amount for people who have the same position |

Oh wait, you're a marketing executive now with a British company? Well then if the details provided are true, you're making way too little. Your story still sounds a little weird, I can't put my mind around in what way, but if you are managing a team for only $20K USD a year, thats not right either. |

You need to ask about the performance bonus, annual bonus and other incentives like additional annual leave, or start interviewing for other roles - but it might be hard if you only have 1 years experience. That is the only way to find out your true networth, for all you know your skillsets could be worth 3x as much if several MNCs want you, then again on the other hand ... if no one wants you, could potentially be earning 0RMB.
Also depends if you are US Ivy league or state school .... PM me if you want more info - just make sure you ask for alot more (eg: 30kRMB p/m + 70% bonus and 40days annual leave and then negotiate your way to a magical number which you will be happy with).
But I think Chinese companies here are less concerned about Ivy status as opposed to HKG and SGP, but then again it also depends on which role and industry.... also note that a local hire/local grad makes 3k-5k fresh p/m out of school.
