| Post subject: Yahoo DIfficulties Everyday |
Has anyone else noticed that Yahoo is really difficult to access between about 2:30 and 4:30 every day? Been this way for a few weeks . . . Anyone found a way around this? Besides not using Yahoo, that is! |

I encountered the same problem. There's not much you can do about it, unfortunately. Hotmail has the same problem at times. |

The only disadvantage with hotmail so far is that unlike with Yahoo, I can not access my POP-mail server. |

The real reason it slows down is that the Chinese boys love their online games and suck up bandwidth. I've seen some playing 3 or 4 games at a time. Take a peek into a Net Bar next time you go by. It's amusing how much time is wasted playing these games.  )) Ok, so it has to do with Internet traffic accross the Pacific, Atlantic or just good old distance. If you just want to get on to get your mail try using Outlook Express on your computer and set it up as a POP3. Works quickly here for me. Also, if you find it slow getting into Yahoo or Hotmail, try logging on on the China site. Usually get in quickly. With Yahoo it will ask you if you want to speed up your mail access by moving your info to a server here (mirrors the info here). If you click yes, Yahoo will transfer your info to a server here in China (me thinks it China). Then works much faster. My experience has been with Yahoo so not sure about Hotmail. Hope this helps. |

Hi Magnolia,
are you having troubles to access only in specific time?? I have been trying to access everyday and all time and I have never been able to be login??
I am thinking to start using the hotmail that has been working for me most of the time... |

In general during the time the Chinese are awake, Yahoo is busy. www.msn.com loads pretty fast 50-90kb/sec on my 2mb-ADSL during business-hour in SH. My paid hotmail account works well within Outlook Express as well. The free Hotmail account is so limited that it is almost useless. Btw, Micrsoft recently annouced it would increase the storage for Hotmail in this July - 250mb for free accounts and 2gb for $20/yr. You will find the details easily with Goole.
I dont admire like POP email server and prefer webmail and/or IMAP, because POP downloads everything into my disk, be it email or virus or spam. With Outlook Express properly configurred, one can delete unwanted emails before they are downloaded. Of course, a decent anti-virus app is a must. Which certainly not Norton... |

if you access internet from public i-net cafe, then of course you will to share the bandwidth with other users. but if connect from home, using ur own computer, if u use Yahoo, try using the POP3 email options using either Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express/iMail (Mac)... this option could be faster since you don't have to login to the web-based interface (using IE browser).
if u ask why slow, coz sometimes for certain website, the government will impose some sorta screening, hence it gets through more gateway before it reach the intended URL destinantion.
Alternatively, if you use ADSL at home, try to connect to i-net via VPN (Virtual Private Network). I use VPN at work or at home, so I re-reroute my connection to either Singapore or the US, hence the speed and the FREEDOM to browse BBC NEWS Online... that is otherwise banned if you use regular connection. If anyone would like to learn more about VPN, just gimme a buzz. unfinishedandroid_at_yahoo_do_it

Thanks for all the replies! It seems everyone in the world knows about computers . . . except me. Yahoo is still giving me a hard time, but perhaps I should switch to a POP 3. I like having 2gb of storage . . . so I don't really want to switch to Hotmail, which also had so much spam a few years ago that it drove me batty.
OBS - Great suggestion to try and log on using the China site . . . have never thought of doing that!
Quasi - can't delete or reply? I don't have that problem . . . I can usually log on in the mornings and evenings and everything is fine (send, delete, receive) but in the mid afternoons it just stops! Can get to Yahoo, but when I try to log in, it will just churn away forever and not go anywhere. Hmmm . . . I don't have any suggestions for your problem, I'm sorry.
Unfinishedandroid - that VPN sounds interesting. Is it similar to a proxy server or something totally different?
sconcerned - you are right about Norton . . . I am having other issues there!

Whatever you do, do not use email services from ISP in China. Not only you will lose emails, but also you will expose yourself to *severe* security issues. Dont be fooled by the speed an ISP in China may provide you with. You will have lots more to loose.
Have you tried Hushmail? A webmail service using 256 bit encryption technology. It is much safer and more private.......

I've been having trouble with my Yahoo email too -- oddly my Hotmail has worked 99% of the time here in China, but many of my friends complain about theirs. HOWEVER, I just downloaded the new Mozilla browser and I can get into my Yahoo email pretty well with that, and other sites I've had trouble with on IE. In fact, the US Gov has released a warning about doing online banking with IE -- not stable, as if we didn't know already. Anyway check out Mozilla and tell us if that helps.
Also on topic, has anyone else here been using google's Gmail? (It's not totally public yet) One friggin GIGabyte of email space, but I've been having trouble using that account from here in China. |

It's a simple, straightforward task, but perhaps best not to give instructions/links here. Just do a search on one of the bigger search engines for "proxy servers". |

And experiment with different ones (different proxy servers) from different countries. |

In my experience using proxy servers, a lot of whatayacallit, secure/interactive stuff won't work. Like transfering money, logging into my gmail account, etc. Maybe i'm using the wrong proxys? |

I've encountered the problems too, but mostly the trouble is at the providers side and not yours. Like in the office here internet speed should be fast, like hotmail loaded in 20 seconds, mostly takes an hour no matter what time of day :s
Poor service actually, but otherwise I recon use a 163 account. www.163.com but should read Chinese

yahoo hasn't worked well for me in over a year. it's always slow. the front page often loads fine but when you have to login, it slows up. hotmail is the same.
the only free email service that has worked well for me has been gmail, which has been very fast, but that service has been riddled with its own technical problems. |

wow -- i've had the opposite problem. My hotmail works 99% of the time, just fine. Yahoo is better than 50%. Gmail is worse than 10%. We gotta get to the bottom of all this... Is is operating systems? Geo-location? Connection type?
Actually, though, I have had the same experience with these in every place I've logged on -- internet cafes, public library, friends homes, offices around town, and my home. So I don't get it -- do you have the same problems in one place, or in every place you log on? |

I'm pretty sure the problems (your problems) are attributed to Mainland China, and the way the routers are configured (and not configured) for sending/receiving traffic going overseas. I was just down in Hong Kong recently and had no problem accessing any of the sites mentioned above, but as soon as I returned to Shanghai, the typical problems resurfaced with yahoo and some others.
Interestingly, I have at times used local dial-up numbers (56k) in various Mainland China cities and have had no problem getting to various sites, but as soon as I switch to broadband, then problems resurface.
I mentioned proxy servers above - experiment with different ones, and you'll get thru (on broadband as well). I don't want to list any sites, but you should be able to lookup sources that display proxy servers by country and port used and by whether or not the service is anonymous or not. |

Yes, I see. I guess the frustrating thing is that it's all so inconsistent and unpredictable. And it's not always an army of cens*rs, it's mundane connection problems. All the advert-ganda swirling around asking for investment in Shanghai should include the fine print *But we have connection problems*... Seriouly, i've considered moving my company to Hangzhou if that's what it takes to get a decent connection. |
