Hi,
I'm going to SH next week and if every is according to plan, my family will be moving there for maybe 2 years. I've just got a job there.
I would love to catch up with the rest here once I've settled down. Btw, does anyone know where is North Coa Xi Road? Any special landmark?

I moved to Shanghai abt 2 months back. I have been travelling to Shanghai frequently prior to my relocation. Really love the place here.Whatever it is , always approach things here with an open mind. I know of quite a few fellow Singaporeans who tend to make comparisons abt everything and anything. To put it simply think of Shanghai or China for that matter as what Singapore was back then.
As for cost of living , it is really cheap here compared to back home. Accomodation will probably take the biggest chunk out of your budget. Look around for accomodation. There are plenty around here.

hehehehe......what to do, me feeling veri sotong here.....that day told the cab driver to go to gubei ikea.... cabbie stunned for abt 10 sec and then said "ikea is in xujiahui".....so paiseh..... 
realised that my biggest problem is that i dont seem to be able to find the correct chinese terminology.... was reduced to a 3 min description of evaporated milk when i wanted some with my pudding.....and in the end, i got condensed milk instead...... need to get hold of an eng/chinese dictionary..... any recommendations? |

Hi Hi ... so happy to see all the responses by 'singaporeans' here. Me & hubby will be joining u guys early next year and still worrying on how to adapt to a new life there.
Seeing all the replies really 'calm' me down a little. I do hope that there will be somebody to lead a group and organise some gatherings or 'help desk' for the newbies going to SH.. 
Actually my bigggest worry is housing. As I can see from most of the posted msg, majority are "where to stay?" .. So afraid of choosing the wrong district and the worst to get a 'problematic' apartment! 
I will be going to visit SH (for the 1st time) in early August! Hope could get a glimpse of the city. I think it'll be very hot by then (it's already 35 degree now right?).
Hope I'm not too 'loh soh'! Take care and Shanghai here I come !!!  |

Alamak you asking for special landmark for Cao Xi Bei Lu ( sounds like something @$% in Hokkien ).  .so far haven't seen anything worth a landmark status. The trick in getting around in Shanghai is that you have to know the names of the two roads that meet..anyway if you have the add of wherever you are going to don't get off the cab until you get to your destination..make sure that the cabbie bring you to the doorstep of the location. pm me if you have anything..by the way my Chinese sucks big time and I'm doing ok here. |

Hi everyone,
Nice to see this topic is still active. Not sure when I posted my reply a few days ago whether there would be any responses; great to see so many responses appearing. Like jnaleow, I'm heartened to see so many fellow Singaporeans in Shanghai as that will certainly help with my transition (albeit I've been working in London for the past 4 years and so my Singlish has gotten a bit rusty ) I'm sure I'll pick it up very quickly again, especially through our favourite pastime, makan-ing. My wife and I will be moving over to Shanghai in late Sept and am both looking forward to it. We are lucky in that we have jobs arranged but still have the headache of relocation and finding a place to stay. Not too worried though as there are many property agent websites to do initial research and there seems to be a good pool of quality housing stock in Shanghai. But still damn laychay so dreading it a bit. Anyway, looking forward to seeing everyone and will PM everyone once I get there and hopefully be able to arrange something or join in something already set up. Jnaleow and Keemingchi: About housing.....just to share my experience.....i did plenty of web searching (i think i caused the death of a few trees with the amount of stuff i printed out), but realised it was not quite useful when i actually came over to reccee the place.... what happened was that some of the places i was interested in either didn't have vacancies, out of my budget, or were nothing like the glossy pics you find online (horrible surroundings, much smaller than shown online etc)....in the end, my hubby and i settled for a place that was recommended by his colleague and our housing agent after going house-hunting for 2 full days... quite happy with our place now, so i would suggest that you just come over for a reccee trip if possible, get a housing agent, talk to your expat colleagues and look through this site for some ideas, and then get your housing agent to start house hunting with you....let us know how it goes yah? |

jonkwan is right, there is quite a huge singapore community here. you can always hear the "yalor" while walking on the street.

thanks Blursotong for sharing your experience on house hunting! I'm sure it's tedious but it should be worth it to really go to see the 'real thing' rather than looking at pictures online. I would let you know when's my turn to go down there for house hunting.
keemingchi, glad to know that you and yr wife going SH soon, pls do share with us (or me) on your 'survivor' experience(s) okay!

blursotong, thanks also from me for your useful advice. have been approaching the websites with a pinch of salt already so not too surprised to hear that the internet experience was mixed.
however, for someone with no idea what shanghai is like and no opportunity for a recce trip (london being too far away and no time for the trip ) , it's the next best thing available and when combined with resources such as this website, can help to some extent. any good information I get will definitely be shared ... I really like the spirit of cooperation seen on this website.
Can't really complain too much though ... my firm regularly rotates people through shaghai so have talked to someone who has gone before for 6 months so have a bit of an idea what it is like. I will have accommodation provided for a short time at the start and firm will assist in locating accommodation so should be ok. like singapore, think it just depends on how much you want to pay and like everyone, ai pe ai qi (not sure my hokkien spelling is up to scratch!!!) so keeping fingers crossed will find something good and cheap. can't be worse than london anyway!
jonkwan, enjoy being back home ... heard good things about the singaporean food in SH but can't be better than the real thing so enjoy ... like jnaleow said, it's not a bad thing being back home. for me, nothing recharges the batteries like a trip back home so look on the bright side.
now that my terms and conditions are being finalised, really excited and looking forward to coming over. know sept is still some time away but can't help looking forward to seeing SH and meeting up with you all. in the meantime, let's keep chatting on this forum and we'll be like old makan kakis when we finally meet (although have to say that both my wife and myself have jobs lined up already so unlikely to have as much free time ... wonder if I can convince her that to adopt the "quit job and follow wife to SH" route |

Hi, here is another singaporean, got here about 2 wks ago. start work and in the same time searching for house. feeling a bit dazed as i am still adjusting to the place. been told by my agent that house rental is on slight uptrend, not sure whether to believe him. anyway, thinking of settling down at pudong though i am working in puxi. any advice from anyone or is there anyone doing this? |

If u are working along metro line 2 in Puxi, and would like to stay in Pudong, then u should try to get an apartment along line 2 in pudong as well. As long as u can get to the metro easily, then it is really no trouble at all. I am staying at a housing development just across the mtero station at LongYang, and it takes me just about 20minues by metro to People's Square. I am Malaysian (grew up in Singapore though) but to my knowledge, there are many Singaporeans (and other foreigners) living in this same compound. There are also many new apartments near Century Park metro.
If you are working along metro line 1 in Puxi, then you may want to reconsider whether you want to brave the crowds to change metro at People's Square to get to line 1 - it is quite a walk to get to other line. Then again, if you are like most of my Singaporean friends here, just grab a taxi - no trouble at all.

this sounds like a great solution, housing is cheaper in pudong area... i may consider this for my next move, will be working on my own soon, got to control spending. |
