| Post subject: Chinese New Year holiday 2/2008 |
CNY falls on Feb 7, 2008 next year. How does the golden week holiday work? Does the Golden Week start Feb 7th and then additional 4 business days after that or does it get "round up" to start Feb 4th and ends Feb 8th? (with replacement days of work in the weekend Feb 2/3, I pressume??)
Thanks. |

It's not decided until the last minute by the government so there's no way to know for sure but you can guess it'll start on the 7th and end 7 days later on the 13th BUT we'll probably have to work the weekend before which is 2nd and 3rd. This is based on what's happened in previous years.
National Day this year was very "tidy" because it just happened to begin on a Monday. |

Think this is one of the things that drives foreigners crazy when they first come to China--lack of long-term planning. Used to drive me up a wall. However, after a while one does adjust. Maybe accounts for the slower pace of life is places other than SH. |

There're talks about abolishing the Golden Weeks altogether, but most likely the May Day week will be the 1st to go. They'll spread it to other traditional Chinese holidays in order to mitigate the pressure on tourist attractions over the country.
Come to think of it, it was a really dumb idea to let 1.3 billion people go on their vacation/holidays all at the same time, wasn't it?! But we know the government officials aren't necessarily the sharpest tool in the shed. So surprise, surprise! |

I think it was in the China Daily I saw some discussion that the gov't plans to change in 2009. Think they are planning to make it a one or two day holiday and then spread more throughout the year--similar to other countries. Too bad cause I like the holidays longer. However, considering that more and more of the 1.3 are traveling does make sense to spread them out. |

Obviously it's better to stagger it and I always thought it odd that big festivals like mid-autumn and qing ming were not holidays like they are in Hong Kong so that should be a good solution and there's not that much to spread since each Golden week is actually just 3 days extra off work plus two weekends squeezed together each time. I for one will be happy not to have to work 10 or 11 days consecutively just so I can then have 7 days straight. |

I think many of the Chinese like it as many of them travel to their hometowns to be with family. Just look at the train and bus stations and airport during that time. Amazingly busy. One thing about Chinese culture is family is still a priority. So they don't mind working the longer stretch to get a longer holiday. Think if you are to ask many of those working in our home countries if they'd like to work a longer stretch to have a longer holiday, most would say yes. |

Yes, the gov't is thinking of changing the long holiday, and split to make some other traditional holidays into public holidays.
I'd prefer longer holidays. China is big, it takes time to travel. Also, nowadays more and more people go to work outside their hometowns/home cities. If the public holiday is just one or two days, it's hard to go back as time is too limited. (Thinking about Mid-Autumn Festival when most families like to get united). Shorter public holidays still mean impossibility to meet family memebers.
But long holidays do pose a lot of problems to the public transportation depts, and other service agencies/bodies as well. |
