The iPhone can now do traditional chinese input, so simplified is not far behind...
Once thats done, it will be a useful phone here. |
Anyone know of a website that would say when an iphone with simplified chinese sms input would be available?
My girlfriend wants to buy an iphone with an english user interface and chinese sms input but so far, we can only find an iphone with a chinese user interface with a chinese sms input.
Anyone know if an english language iphone with chinese sms input is available yet? |

Cool, thx. I'll ask them.
Also, I may be going to HK soon. Anyone know the price of a iPhone selling in HK and whether it's cheaper there than in Shanghai? |

went to HK-Plaza during the weekend and on the second floor at the mobile phone section, there was a booth with the first price of RMB 3600. I did not even bother to start "negotiating", as I thought the price was quite high.
How low do you reckon they go? RMB 2500-2800, if yes, then I will probably take one. |

What features can you use here? Wireless internet? I see there is going to be simplified SMS... how about a dictionary? |

3600 could be a 4GB version or a Chinese brand. Usual price is much higher. |

Exactly. So Apple, which has a contract with AT&T that guarantees an exclusive, gets to pretend they are doing something about the evil hackers. Meanwhile, they don't try all that hard .... |

There are rumors, that EDGE doesn't work on an unlocked iPhone. Does this imply that internet doesn't work, as EDGE is an enhancement of GPRS and thus GPRS is not working, too?
However, never an owner of an unlocked iPhone said anything about this possible problem. |

edge is what they call 2.5G. speeds at about 130kbps i believe... not quite full on 3g or 3.5g; however, for checking emails and chatting it should be enough. from what i've been told, EDGE is available from china mobile, even if their employees don't know it. coverage is spotty, but i'm not sure if that applies to shanghai or china proper.
heavily considering this phone... but i'm taking a look at htc's touch as well. anyone have any other suggestions? i need a responsive phone (i hate wm6), good battery time, good browser. don't need vid or music playback. i just want something reliable, which my universal is not. |

btw, paul2008, i think the only function that is disabled when unlocking is one of at&t's proprietary voice messaging functions. everything else still works... |

So, if a device is EDGE capable and the provider has EDGE service, and phone is connected to internet via provider's GPRS, it automatically can access web at EDGE speed? |

Edge and GPRS no problem at all. English userface, Chinese sms input, no problem.
I will not update the software (yet), thanks Fiddler for the reminder, but I have heard it will be possible to update soon.
Definitely worth the money! |

I guess it depends on the phone but mine (Samsung SGH-i600) can just be set to automatically find the best signal and I get a little E when there is EDGE coverage and G when just GPRS. Also U for UMTS when in Taiwan, Korea and Japan and even luckier H for HSDPA sometimes!
This is the reason I have no interest in the iPhone. No 3G service so cannot roam in Japan and Korea. |

yah, the 3g phone might be enough to make me wait until the next iteration. on the other hand... there's no 3g yet in the states either. |

2 questions:
I entered 'cmwap' for APN in EDGE Settings, but it seems the connection doesn't work. Should there be other settings?
Also, how does iPhone switch between GPRS and Wi-Fi if both are available? There is no way to manually choose the connection.
Thanks! |

Ok, found an application called 'Services' allowing turning EDGE, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on and off. |

why the iphone... its an expensive piece of...with little in the way of hardware that makes it cutting edge. ok maybe the software interface has something unique about it, but for how long, and whether or not its "great" is purely subjective...
for a better PPC/PDA/phone device there are many
...try the HTC's range like the HTC TyTN II for example... way more software and apllications out there for a PPC. |
