i think it really depends on where you want to stay in pudong and where you work in puxi......my hubby sometimes has to go to work in pudong (we stay in puxi), and it's either a jam on the mrt (heard the horror stories about people's square), or a very expensive cab ride (assuming that you can grab a cab in the first place).....not sure if it's the same situation the other way around (pudong into puxi)......

A slight deviation from what was being discussed in the last few posts, but I desperately need to tap into the collective wisdom of all you fellow Singaporeans who are already in Shanghai.
I am likely to end up buying an apt in Shanghai, as I will be moving to the city for at least 5 years. Wondering if it make sense to buy my furniture and domestic appliances from Singapore (my company will be paying for freight and duties).
Questions:
1) Is the quality and variety of the furniture that is available in Shanghai similar to (or better than) the stuff we get at Courts / Harvey Norman / Picket & Rail? How does the price compare?
2) For non-Chinese brands, how does the price and variety of domestic appliances available in compare to that in Singapore (Courts / Best Denki / Harvey Norman)?

1. Well, things you get from Courts Harvey Norman etc are probably made in China anyway. Why bother?
2. If you get those non-Chinese brands made in China, probably just 10-20% more expensive than local brands because of the brand name and technology (but mind you some of the local brands are as good or better, except on quality). Local brands will be definitely cheaper, say 30%, I guess. |

Well, given my tight and unpredictable schedule (with only 1 week per month in Shanghai o average), it may be hard... but why not if I kick off one for this Sat?
ANYONE INTERESTED in a lunch gathering of fellow-singaporeans at Crossroad at Nanjing West Road (corner of Changle Road), sorry for selfish reason, I like the carrot cake there?
Time: 3 pm every Saturday
Cost: if we need to make this a regular thing, let's go dutch on food to share and remember what you order for drinks and pay at the end. |

Hi,
I hv jus bumped into this thread and boy-oh-boy am I happy 
My hubby and I will be flyin in this Thur to go house-hunting... and yes, my hubby is going to work here for few years, starting in Aug.
If our plans go well, my & my boy (turning 3 in Sep) will join Hubby in a yr or 2.
I definitely think it is great for all of you "quit job and follow" wifees... big step and decision... howe/v I still hv alot of concerns - mainly on my boy.
But anyway, since there will be a makan session this Sat, I will try to be there too!!! With Hubby, of coz.. I am sure we will be able to get alot of tips fr all of you whom hv been here already...and maybe, settle some of my concerns

3 pm this sat at crossroad cafe,
Nanjing West Road (corner of Changle Road), you will see a standard chartered bank at the opposite corner. The place is right next to Always Cafe (another singaporean cafe)
If it seems to be quite a number of people to show up on Sat, I may need to call them and reserve a long table... |

Hey
There's another fantastic makan place..the Penang laksa really makes you ...slurp..slurp..slurp..the roti prata banana oso make you want to peng.. you actually see mama making prata there..i think it's open by a KL guy..all the comfort food are available and they serve you little bowls of dessert after your meals..we had green bean soup the other day..just like wat mum makes at home..The place is big enuff for everybody..

For furniture there's always Ikea here..actually it all depends on your budget..there are quite a bit of furniture malls here but then some of the designs are really ching-chong-cheng..there are those Italian imported furniture at Plaza 66..they cost an arm and leg but then the quality is assured..Look around first lah..or you can always move your favourite furniture here and look around for the others. Anyway Courts , Harvey Norman and Picket don't really offer GOOD quality furniture..
As for domestic appliances, there are plentiful here..but I would greatly suggest that if you love cooking, bring over some of the necessary appliances..I brought over my food processor as the one that I bought here super sucks!! The "plastic" sides melted..would you believe it? Other than that the things here are oklah..nothing to shout abt..TV is dirt cheap here..Anything imported be prepared to pay and pay..You can live with the local products here..a good brand will be Haier..go to their website..you can check out stuff from these websites

not say singaporean guys not trustworthy, but hey, how else do we singaporean ladies get to be tai-tais huh? no chance of being tai-tai in singapore with the cost of living there.....need 2 incomes leh.... here got chance to be tai-tai then better grab it lor.... hehehe......

Hi,
I was born in China, moved to Singapore for university and work for the last 10 years. Now I am Singapore citizen, and I have got a job in shanghai and will be there in late August. From my background, I guess I understand the "fusion" of culture at both countries. I would be glad to know more Singaporean in Shanghai, and attend your gathering if possiable. |

It's so nice that there's a 'gathering' this Sat (24/7)... Too bad I'm only going to Shanghai on 31/7... I'll be there for a few days to 'take a look' what SH is all about, and to prepare for relocating there at the end of the year.
I really hope could meet up any of u gals during the 2 days that I'm free... not sure if anyone would be free to meet up, have a little chat .. any 'tai-tai' that got a few hours to spare PM me okie.. .. ha ha .. |

We can make it a regular gathering for every week though I am unlikely to be able to attend too frequently, but if there are people attending every session, it will help socialize new comers into the scene of Shanghai.

I am soooo happy to read this post. We will be shifting to Shanghai soon and have been browsing the net for more info about the place. Boy, was so happy to know so many kakis in Shanghai... got food outing somemore.... yummy.... will join you guys/gals when we arrived.
on a serious note, need some of your expert advice.
we will be going over to shanghai soon to look for place to stay. may i know who signed the rental agreement with the landlord? your company or yourself? will there be any issue if we sign directly with the landlord?
also, how many houses/apartments did you view before you finally decide on one?
any advice for me that you think i should take note of during house search?
gee, sorry to bother u with so many questions. cant help it lah... stressed........ |

Remember it's the Crossroad Cafe at Nanjing West Road corner of Changle Road (not the one in Parkson or New World Square - I suspect those are copycats.
As for Sentogal's question, who signs the rental contract will have obviously legal as well as financial implications.
On the financial implication part, it is basically whether you have control over how much you spend on rental. In fact, if you get a lump sum to spend on rental, most people will spend less and keep the rest by providing "Fapiao" for the full amount. but if your company signs it, the payment will go directly from your company to the landlord, and usually this will require "Fapiao" as well and some would charge 5% additional for the rental amount to cover for the tax. |

Oh, forgot to say that to make it easy for strangers to know each other when you get to Crossroad tomorrow, ask for Barry when you get there. I will try to be there earlier to let the waiters and waitresses know.
Still don't know how many will show up, but seems to be quite a sizeable crowd. |
