Change the APN to 'cmnet'.

Ok, thanks.
By the way, if anyone wants to unlock their phone (any firmware version), or add Chinese input/menus, or install some dictionaries, IM programs, etc - I can help with that, since I did it with my phone.

Prices are dropping fast. I was quoted around 4600 for an 8gb yesterday with Chinese capability.

Well, I have an unopened 8gb that I'm selling in classifieds at this price for some time now, and I can add everything to it, also.

i picked up an iphone yesterday at XJH. quote was 4350, got it at 4200. the store was the one right outside the arcade on the right hand side if you're walking into the electronics mart. they generally have decent prices; the apple store upstairs quoted 4600, a small booth quoted 4800. this was for the 8g with english menu and chinese sms.

i would like to re-viriginize my iphone and then upgrade to 1.1.1 and unlock it again, mainly for the custom ringtones... however, it seems there is a way to get custom ringtones without upgrading, so i'm looking into that. seems i might be able to do it with 7.4.1 and 1.0.2.

btw, i love this thing.

just fyi.

EDGE is available from china mobile. they call it E-GPRS. the rates and service access are the same whether it is the slower GPRS or the higher speed E-GPRS. if there is an E-GPRS service available, it automatically switches. in the case of the iphone, when E-GPRS is connected, there is a little E along the top menu bar.

it is not even necessary to go into china mobile to apply for the service. all you have to do is enter "cmnet" under your APN, or access point. rates are as follows:

standard: 0/month; 0MB included data; 0.03/KB rate
20RMB set: 20/month; 50MB included data; 0.01/KB overage
100RMB set: 100/month; 800MB included data; 0.01/KG overage
200RMB set: 200/month; 2000MB included data; 0.01/KG overage

btw, sinned69, i got the iphone because it seems to work. i've had bad experiences with HTC phones. i had an O2 XDA and a Universal, and my father and cousin have TyTns (i bought my dad his Tytn for xmas). both (XDA and Universal) were slow in response, required multiple reboots, had connection problems and just didn't function reliably. my universal was horrible; it would ask for a password randomly- frustrating given that i never set a password. i had to reflash it multiple times because of memory leakage issues. now, this may be more software than hardware. so, i've got more of a thing against windows mobile than i do against HTC. still, i've heard even the new touch from HTC is difficult to work with. whatever the case, i will never ever buy a windows mobile device. if HTC comes out with one of their feature packed phones, i may consider going back if they evolve away from WM.

you're right though, there is more software for WM. but only because WM has been around for longer. and even then, there's no guarantee the software will work correctly or in an acceptable fashion. of course, that remains to be seen for the iphone as well. however, all i really NEED for my phone to do is place phone calls, text, allow access to email, and surf the web. those are all things the iphone does well. anything extra is icing on the cake.

I've had a whole bunch of HTC Windows Mobile phones with countless problems. I have a Samsung SGH-i600 (Blackjack) now running Windows Mobile and it's much much more stable. I'm pleased with it.

I like the iPhone but no 3G is no good for me.

Post subject: iPhone clone...

I can get you an iPhone clone called an iWave phone. Almost exactly alike the iPhone. Uses two sim cards so no carrier needed. I get them from a company in Ningbo for $190, which is 1,425 rmb.

Transfer your sim card from your cell phone here to the iWave phone and it operates.

whoever wants an iphone for Christmas better get it now.

the prices will rise , as apple announced that you can now buy max 2 iphones per person and creditcards only.

so people who used to buy them in masses can't anymore and alot of people who actually buy them to export them don't want to reveal their identities ( it's still against the official terms of sales)

On the other side when the iPhone hits france, it will be sold unlocked anyway as it's against the french law to sell it locked to a carrier.

Expect a premium on the price though.

ok whoever payed 5000 got ripped! I bought the iphone 8gb in Shanghai for 4300 unlocked using the software method, you have to look out for phones that have been unlocked using the hardware method cause they get screwed after a while.

I have my phone running 1.1.1 and its working great. The only issue most iphone owners face is a dust build up on the headphone jack that causes the phone to think that headphones are plugged in and leaving the person unable to use the phone normally, and instead use the speaker phone. This goes away if you simply take an cotton swab and swipe the headphone jack in order to clean it. Then to test if the volume is working go to phone and use the keypad. If you hear sound then you'll be fine next time you get a call.

hey mandms,

how many third party apps did you put on your 1.1.1 phone? i virginised, upgraded, and the unlocked via anysim to 1.1.1. i've got some third party apps on there, and it seems my phone is a little slower and buggy than it was before. i plan to take some of the apps off and clean it up a bit. but just wondering how you were faring.

kappakai, i have 1.1.1 and am running about 8 third party apps including summerboard. actually seems to be working fine and is possibly less sluggish than it was under 1.0.2. the only real lag i experience is a couple seconds to load certain apps. if it's that bad, it might be something about the way you upgraded, seeing as how there are 50 billion different hacks.

about EDGE...? i heard that foreigners can't get a monthly plan with China Mobile. is this true? i recharge mine via convenience store card thingies and i can burn through 100rmb easily in a day or two. the edge packages 20rmb/50mb, etc. are for people on a plan/contract thing only right?

Thats 2 per credit card.
Most american's I know have about 10-15 credit cards, so I don't foresee this being a big issue. Plus there are plenty of shops selling them who don't care to much about "regulations" that are unenforceable.

cheng,

i didn't really get a chance to play around with 1.0.2 before i upgraded. the behavior of the iphone is a little more predictable now, and its been working fine, especially compared to my htc universal POS.

getting a monthly plan with china mobile in general is a pain in the ass. apparently, you either need a local guy to go in for you, or your company needs to set it up. and seeing how responsive companies around here are to employee needs, you're probably better off bringing in the local satay guy to setup your account.

regarding edge, you do not need a monthly account. they will deduct it from your phone account just like phone calls. i have the 100rmb/ month plan which gives you 800MB. since november 1st, i've used... 2.7MB. the edge service here is good enough to check my email (gmail via imap); update weather, check my stocks, and to do the occasional web surfing.

cool, thanks. so if i want to use the 800MB/100RMB plan or the 50MB/20RMB plan, I don't need a monthly plan? hmm, i need to go to China Mobile asap. The randoms who ask to see my phone seem disappointed when I tell them I turned off EDGE cuz it's too expensive. =P

yah my friend james was having the same issue, as did i when using gprs on my old htc. all of a sudden i'd have no money on my account. just go to chimo and ask for "e-gprs". if you ask for edge they'll get confused and sullen.

Investors Roiled By China/iPhone News
Carl Gutierrez, 11.13.07, 4:45 PM ET

Apple's iPhone is chasing the Chinese dragon.

On Tuesday, shares of Apple got a 11.2%, or $17.14, boost to $170.90 in late-afternoon trading after investors found out their company was in “preliminary contact” with China Mobile, the country’s largest handset operator, about introducing the iPhone to the coveted Chinese market.

The broad-market rebound also didn't hurt either (See "Wall Street Rising").

Huang Haibo, an executive at China Mobile, stressed the two companies had not made any concrete progress, yet, but noted they both hope to bring the iPhone to the world's largest developing market.

“The potential that the deal comes through is fairly high,” said Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves, “and Apple has alluded to entering the Asian market next year.”

Apple’s target is to capture the country's biggest carrier, and China Mobile and China Unicom are pretty even in size with one another, Hargreaves said.

“Either one of those would be a material partnership for them,” Hargreaves added. “Each one has over 70 million post-paid subscribers, which is the important number because you can have a billion pre-paid but that’s not Apple’s market.”

The deal would be big, as it would essentially create another AT&THargreaves said, and would give the company a foot in the door to the growing Chinese market. AT&T is the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the United States.

“That would probably be the most important part of that relationship for Apple,” Hargreaves argued.

Still, while Hargreaves called the news a "definite positive", and a "definite reason" to own the stock, he didn’t feel Tuesday’s rise in share price was warranted.

Tuesday’s development came after Apple introduced the iPhone to Germany and Britain on Friday (See “iPhone’s U.K. Invasion”).

Apple said 1.4 million iPhones were snapped up in the first three months after its launch, and hopes to sell 10 million by the end of 2008.

Well, there you go. It's only a matter of time now.

Eh, who cares. I'll hack my phone until they officially free it as I am collecting SIM cards around the world.

I just hope this results in an Apple store in China so I can drool over the many things I cannot afford.
